Unseasonal Hailstorms Wreak Havoc on Uttar Pradesh Farmlands

Recent unseasonal weather patterns have severely impacted agricultural regions across Uttar Pradesh, with hailstorms and excessive rainfall causing widespread crop damage. Government assessments reveal the scale of destruction and the ongoing relief efforts.

Extensive Damage Across Multiple Districts

According to official data, crops spanning over 4,053.11 hectares have been damaged across 17 districts of Uttar Pradesh. This has directly affected 14,207 farmers, with financial assistance already provided to 9,992 of them amounting to Rs 4,47,24,779. A government spokesperson emphasized that the impact of excessive rainfall has been particularly severe this season.

In a separate assessment focusing on recent hailstorm events, damage was recorded across 244.23 hectares in 21 districts, impacting 286 farmers who have received relief of Rs 13,34,217 so far.

District-Specific Impacts and Assessments

The damage has been unevenly distributed across the state with some districts experiencing particularly severe losses:

  • Saharanpur District: Unseasonal heavy rainfall between March 15 and March 22 led to crop damage over 11 hectares in five villages, affecting 44 farmers.
  • Lalitpur District: Significant damage was recorded across 1,650.75 hectares in three tehsils, impacting a total of 3,142 farmers.

Government Response and Relief Measures

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed district administrations to conduct immediate assessments of crop losses and ensure timely relief distribution to affected farmers. The relief commissioner's office has released Rs 20 crore to districts starting March 15 to address various damages including crop loss, house damage, cattle loss, and loss of life.

Principal Secretary Revenue Aparna U reviewed the distribution of relief amounts on Saturday, emphasizing that districts experiencing budget shortages should immediately inform the relief commissioner's office. She also appealed to the general public to register complaints with the office if they encounter difficulties in receiving relief amounts.

Weather Warnings and Future Preparedness

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for unseasonal rain, hailstorms, lightning, and storms across various districts until March 31. These continued weather alerts suggest that farmers and agricultural authorities must remain vigilant in the coming days.

The state government's coordinated response aims to mitigate the financial impact on farming communities while ensuring that relief reaches those most affected by these unexpected weather events.
