Madurai: MDMK general secretary Vaiko on Thursday urged the Tamil Nadu government not to yield to the Union government's pressure to implement the PM SHRI scheme or the three-language policy in the state. He warned that any move in this direction could trigger another language agitation in the state.
Vaiko's warning on language policy
Speaking to reporters after the MDMK functionaries' meet in Madurai, Vaiko said that Chief Minister Vijay should remember the sacrifices of those who lost their lives and underwent imprisonment for Tamil rights. He emphasised that the state must resist any imposition that undermines Tamil language and culture.
Renewed protests against Sterlite
Vaiko also cautioned that there would be renewed protests if the Sterlite copper unit resumes operations in any form in Tuticorin. He reiterated the party's strong opposition to the plant, citing environmental and health concerns.
Coalition government in Tamil Nadu
On the coalition government in Tamil Nadu, Vaiko stated that it was too early to comment and advised people to wait and watch for six months. He acknowledged that some good measures had been taken by the TVK government in the past 17 days, but refrained from making a final assessment.
