Congress Leader Venugopal Challenges Kerala CM with '10 Questions' on Alleged BJP Ties
In a significant political development, senior Congress leader Kc Venugopal has penned an open letter to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, raising serious allegations about what he describes as covert understandings between the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The letter, released on Tuesday, poses ten direct questions that Venugopal claims reflect widespread public concern as Kerala approaches another election cycle.
Questioning High-Level Meetings with BJP Leadership
Venugopal's letter focuses extensively on Vijayan's private meetings with senior BJP ministers. The Congress leader specifically demands explanations for several high-profile encounters, including a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah at his Delhi residence that excluded officials. "What was the agenda behind your meeting with Union home minister Amit Shah at his residence in Delhi, excluding officials?" Venugopal asked pointedly, suggesting this might be where a political "deal" was negotiated.
The letter also references a breakfast meeting with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at Kerala House and various interactions with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. Venugopal questions whether these engagements were part of any formal or informal "understanding" with the BJP, challenging the chief minister to clarify the nature and purpose of these discussions.
Policy Decisions and Coalition Dynamics
Beyond personal meetings, Venugopal scrutinizes specific policy decisions that he suggests indicate alignment with BJP interests. He highlights the state government's implementation of the PM SHRI scheme despite opposition from Communist Party of India (CPI) leaders within the ruling LDF coalition. "What 'deal' was behind this? Whose interests were you protecting... while keeping your own coalition partners in the dark?" Venugopal questioned, implying the decision might reflect external political pressures rather than coalition consensus.
The Congress leader further alleges that decisions regarding labor codes were made "in extreme secrecy" without proper consultation with alliance partners. He specifically flags the increase in trade union registration fees, asking whom this move was intended to "satisfy" and whether it represents concessions to central government priorities.
Legal Cases and Investigation Concerns
Venugopal's letter delves into several high-profile legal matters, questioning whether political considerations have influenced judicial processes. On the SNC-Lavalin case, he asks about repeated adjournments in the Supreme Court and whether these delays might be connected to a "deal" with the central government.
The letter also references the Exalogic Solutions case and the gold and dollar smuggling cases, noting that investigations appear to have "stalled midway." Venugopal demands to know whether there has been any political intervention affecting these probes and why momentum seems to have dissipated in these sensitive matters.
Personnel Matters and Alleged RSS Connections
Further expanding his critique, Venugopal raises questions about senior police officer M R Ajith Kumar and alleged connections with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leaders. He also references an alleged meeting between Vijayan and BJP leaders at a hotel, challenging the chief minister to disclose full details of this encounter and its participants.
Political Context and Electoral Implications
This open letter arrives amid intensifying political competition between the CPI(M)-led LDF and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) for control of Kerala's 140-seat Legislative Assembly. With the state expected to hold elections in 2026, Venugopal's questions aim to shape public discourse about the ruling coalition's relationship with the national BJP government.
"As Kerala once again stands at the threshold of an election, there remain a number of questions in the minds of the people regarding the legacy of your ten-year rule," Venugopal wrote, framing his inquiries as addressing widespread public curiosity rather than mere political posturing. The Congress leader asserts that these questions reflect what is "being widely discussed on the ground" and has formally requested Vijayan's response to each point raised.
The letter represents a strategic move by the Congress to challenge the Left Front's traditional anti-BJP positioning while highlighting potential contradictions in the ruling coalition's actions and alliances. As election preparations intensify, these allegations are likely to feature prominently in political debates across Kerala.
