TVK Chief Vijay Files Nomination in Trichy East Constituency
Thousands of enthusiastic supporters gathered in Trichy on Thursday as TVK leader Vijay officially filed his nomination papers to contest the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections from the Trichy East constituency. This marks the second seat he is contesting in the state polls, having previously submitted his nomination from the Perambur constituency on March 30.
Dual Contests and Political Rivals
Vijay will face off against Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) candidates in both constituencies. In Perambur, he will challenge RD Sekar, who has represented the seat since winning a by-election in 2019. Historically, Perambur was considered a stronghold of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) until 2016. In Trichy East, Vijay's opponent will be DMK candidate Inigo S Irudayaraj.
The nomination filing was preceded by a massive show of support at Tiruchirappalli Airport, where fans flocked to welcome the leader. A party carcade accompanied Vijay ahead of his official engagements, highlighting the fervent grassroots backing for his political entry.
Manifesto Unveiled: Key Promises and Vision
On March 30, Vijay unveiled his party's comprehensive manifesto during a press conference in Chennai, outlining a series of welfare and development measures aimed at transforming Tamil Nadu. He emphasized his vision for a drug-free and self-reliant state, asserting that anti-drug protection zones will be established in all schools and colleges across Tamil Nadu.
"Our primary goal is to create a drug-free Tamil Nadu," Vijay declared, highlighting the urgency of addressing substance abuse among youth. He also assured that all government examinations will be conducted on time without delays, addressing a common grievance among students and job seekers.
Economic and Employment Initiatives
Among the key economic promises, Vijay announced a monthly financial assistance scheme:
- Rs 4,000 per month for graduates
- Rs 2,000 per month for diploma holders
Outlining his broader vision for youth empowerment, Vijay stated, "Our long-term goal is to transform youth from job seekers into job creators." He introduced the "Local Employment for Local People" scheme, pledging to ensure that 75% of jobs in Tamil Nadu are reserved for Tamil people through legislative and administrative measures.
Further boosting the creative economy, Vijay unveiled the "Creative Entrepreneurs Scheme", aimed at positioning Tamil Nadu as a global hub for creators. This ambitious initiative includes:
- Developing 1.5 lakh creators into successful entrepreneurs
- Establishing 500 creative schools across the state to nurture talent
Election Context and Alliances
Tamil Nadu will vote in a single phase on April 23, covering all 234 assembly constituencies. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4. The main electoral contest is expected to be between two major alliances:
- The DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA), which includes Congress, DMDK and VCK
- The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led in Tamil Nadu by the AIADMK along with the BJP and Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK)
Vijay's entry adds a significant new dimension to the political landscape, with his party positioning itself as an alternative focused on youth welfare, employment generation, and cultural preservation.
