Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan delivered a strong message reaffirming the Left Democratic Front's (LDF) unwavering commitment to secularism and the protection of minority rights. He made these remarks while addressing a large gathering at the Samastha centenary message rally held at Putharikandam Maidan in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday.
Historical Legacy of Support for Minorities
The Chief Minister elaborated on the historical actions of Left governments as proof of their consistent stance. He pointed out that it was the first EMS Namboodiripad-led government in 1957 that revoked the ban on mosque construction imposed after the Malabar Rebellion. Furthermore, the same administration undertook a significant expansion of educational infrastructure in the Malabar region.
Vijayan specifically highlighted the creation of Malappuram district as a landmark decision. "We are aware of the criticisms faced by the Left government during the formation of Malappuram," he stated, emphasizing that such moves were principled and not driven by electoral calculations. "Protecting minorities is not done with elections in mind. This is evident from the actions of the LDF government," the CM asserted.
A Call for Vigilance and Unity
Vijayan warned that the nation's foundational principle of unity in diversity is under constant challenge. "This is a time for increased vigilance," he declared, praising Samastha Kerala Jem-iyyathul Ulama for its significant role in fostering a secular society in Kerala. He commended the organization for focusing on peace, harmony, and fighting for the legitimate rights of the Muslim community.
"The views of Jifri Muthukoya Thangal reflect adherence to secularism. During times when communalism has raised its head, the organization has stood on the side of humanity," Vijayan said. He assured that the state government remains prepared at all times to address the concerns of minorities and progress together.
Samastha's Centenary and Broader Concerns
The rally was part of the centenary message journey led by Sayyid Muhammad Jifri Muthukoya Thangal, the President of Samastha. The journey commenced from Nagercoil and received a reception in the capital. After touring various districts, it is scheduled to conclude in Mangaluru on December 24.
In a related press conference, Thangal announced that the centenary international conference of the influential body of Muslim scholars will be held from February 4 to 8, 2026, in Kasaragod. He also voiced concern over the ongoing voter list revision in Kerala, citing reports that over 24 lakh people have been excluded. "No eligible person should be left out of the list, as it would weaken the democratic system of our country. Authorities should be ready to address the concerns of the citizens," Thangal urged.
Concluding his speech, CM Vijayan reinforced the Left's ideological position: "The Left has the tradition of standing firm against communal forces... The Left has taken an uncompromising stance to preserve the secular nature of our country. Whenever communalism has risen, the Left has stood strong."
