A shocking incident of violence against a policewoman has emerged from Chhattisgarh, leading to widespread condemnation. Two individuals have been arrested after a video surfaced showing a woman police constable being stripped and assaulted during a violent anti-mining protest in Raigarh district.
Violence Erupts During Long-Standing Protest
The incident occurred on December 27, 2025, when a protest by residents from 14 villages of Tamnar block against a proposed coal mining project escalated dramatically. The protest, which had been ongoing since December 12 with villagers camping at the Coal Handling Plant (CHP) chowk in Libra village and blocking roads, turned into a large-scale confrontation.
A mob of over a thousand villagers became violent, torching vehicles, pelting stones, assaulting police personnel, and damaging private property. The police force present was heavily outnumbered and was forced to retreat from the scene.
Horrific Assault Captured on Video
In the chaotic retreat, the woman constable was reportedly left behind. A video that later surfaced on social media shows the horrific moments that followed. The constable is seen fallen on the ground, pleading with two men who were tearing her clothes.
The men are heard yelling, "Why did you come here?" and threatening her. One assailant says, "Tear her clothes. Should I hit you with my slipper?" The terrified constable, with tears in her eyes, is seen folding her hands and pleading, "Brother, please let me go. I will not do anything. I did not hit anyone. I was deployed here and was only discharging my duty."
The video, recorded by one of the assailants, shows him using one hand to pull her clothes while holding the phone in the other, before picking up a sandal to threaten her further. The men eventually demanded she leave and not return.
Outrage and Political Fallout
The blurred video was widely shared after being uploaded on Instagram by the All India Mahila Congress. Their caption criticized the state's law and order, stating, "What will happen to common citizens when women policemen are not safe? It is clear that the double-engine BJP government has completely failed on the front of women’s security."
Confirming the arrests, Additional Superintendent of Police Akash Markam stated that two men have been taken into custody in connection with the assault. The incident has sparked a major debate on police safety, the right to protest, and the treatment of women in law enforcement.
The protest highlights the ongoing tension in the region between industrial development projects, like the proposed coal mine, and the rights and livelihoods of local villagers, a conflict that has now been tragically underscored by an act of extreme violence.
