In a significant interaction aimed at shaping the next generation of police leadership, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday met with a group of 23 IPS officer trainees from the 2023 and 2024 batches. The meeting, held in Lucknow, served as a crucial briefing where the CM laid out a clear roadmap for effective and people-centric policing in India's most populous state.
Pillars of Pro-Citizen Policing: Communication, Sensitivity, Positivity
Chief Minister Adityanath began his address by highlighting three core attributes essential for modern police officers. He urged the trainees to build their professional foundation on effective communication, public sensitivity, and a positive attitude. He explained that these qualities are fundamental to transforming police personnel into approachable and effective public servants who can earn the trust of the communities they protect.
The CM specifically addressed the unique challenges of maintaining law and order in a vast and complex state like Uttar Pradesh. He encouraged the young officers to utilize their training period to the fullest, emphasizing that the district training phase is critical for learning how to address real-life issues swiftly and satisfactorily. "As first responders, the police carry the responsibility of earning the victim's trust through their promptness, conduct, and priorities," he stated.
Mastering the Police Station and Modern Crime
Yogi Adityanath identified the police station as the backbone of the entire policing system. He advised the IPS probationers to gain an in-depth, practical understanding of police station functioning, including administration, investigation processes, duty management, and the nature of local disputes. He stressed that human intelligence gathered from strong field presence and community interaction remains one of the most powerful tools for an officer.
Moving to contemporary threats, the Chief Minister paid special attention to the need for vigilance against crimes targeting women, cybercrime, and illegal drug networks. He cautioned that crime is evolving rapidly and police preparedness must match this pace. "Trainees should learn digital forensics, cyber tools, and the effective use of technology," the CM advised, pushing for a modern and tech-savvy police force.
Coordination, Conduct, and Core Values
The CM also spoke extensively on the importance of seamless coordination within the police hierarchy. He asked the trainees to clearly understand the roles, resources, and challenges at the three key levels: the police station, the circle, and the police line. Effective synergy between these units, he noted, would significantly strengthen a district's overall security apparatus.
In a notable piece of advice, Chief Minister Adityanath cautioned the future officers against "irresponsible behaviour with public representatives." He stated that all such interactions must be dignified and responsible, as a casual approach is unbecoming of a police officer. Since public representatives reflect the voice of the people, constructive engagement with them supports stronger law and order, he added.
Concluding his interaction, Yogi Adityanath reminded the 23 IPS trainees that their personal integrity, discipline, and a humane outlook would become their greatest strengths. He said their conduct would not only shape the future law and order scenario of Uttar Pradesh but also reinforce the security and confidence of its over 23 crore residents.
