Five-year-old Mehreen Kaur from Ludhiana has won a silver medal at the 25th Milo International Karate Championship, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from June 25 to 28. This is her maiden international medal and marks a significant milestone for the young karateka.
Youngest Competitor Shines
Mehreen, a student of LKG at Sri Ram Global School, South City, was among the youngest participants in the tournament, which featured around 2,000 karatekas from 18 countries. Despite her age, she secured a podium finish, demonstrating exceptional skill and composure.
According to her coach, Lalita Rani, Mehreen took up karate only a year ago, making the achievement even more remarkable. “Training for nearly two-and-a-half hours every day, the youngster has shown exceptional discipline and determination to rise rapidly through the ranks,” Rani said in a phone call with The Tribune.
Family Support and Dedication
Mehreen’s parents, Rajanjeet Singh and Sandeep Kaur, introduced her to sports to channel her energy positively and reduce screen time. They have been unwavering in their support, which coach Lalita credits as a key factor in Mehreen’s success.
With this silver medal, Mehreen’s total medal tally across district, state, national, and international competitions now stands at five medals, underlining her rapid progress in the sport.
Future Prospects
Coach Lalita expressed confidence in Mehreen’s potential, stating that she has the ability to win many more honors for India on the global stage. The young prodigy’s discipline and consistent training have set a strong foundation for her future in karate.
