Abhay Mishra, an Indian Army soldier and trainee at the Guru Nanak Stadium Training Centre in Ludhiana, secured the silver medal in the Senior National Qazaq Kures Championship held from June 26 to 29 in Samalkha, Panipat. Competing in the Under-66kg category for Jharkhand, Mishra demonstrated exceptional technical skill and resilience, advancing to the final before narrowly missing the gold. His performance earned widespread acclaim from the sporting community.
Consistent performer across combat disciplines
Mishra, originally from Bihar, has built an impressive record across multiple martial arts. In 2024, he won a bronze medal at the South Asian Kurash Championship and was selected to represent India in the qazaq kures event at the World Nomad Games, a global platform for traditional sports. Earlier, in 2018, he claimed a gold medal in the Cadet South Asian Judo Championship, highlighting his versatility in grappling sports.
Training and support system
Mishra's success is attributed to rigorous training under coaches Parveen Thakur and Nitin Batish at the Guru Nanak Stadium Training Centre. The coaches praised his commitment and discipline, noting that he excelled despite the demands of military service. They expressed confidence that Mishra would achieve further success in international competitions. Mishra and his coaches also thanked Ravi Kumar Sharma, General Secretary of the Punjab Qazaq Kures Association, for his encouragement and efforts to promote the sport in the state.
