Massive ASMITA Athletics League to Empower Women Across India on International Women's Day
In a groundbreaking move to honor and inspire women in sports, the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has unveiled an ambitious nationwide athletics league under its ASMITA (Achieving Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women Through Action) programme. Announced by Minister of State Raksha Nikhil Khadse at a media conference in New Delhi, this initiative will see events held at 250 locations across the country on March 8, coinciding with International Women's Day celebrations.
Nationwide Reach and Participation Goals
The ASMITA league is set to be a monumental event, with athletics competitions focusing on 100m, 200m, and 400m races. These will be organized across three age categories: Under-13, 13-18 years, and 18+. Minister Khadse emphasized that the league aims to integrate young women from all corners of India, leveraging the growing popularity of the ASMITA platform. He projected a record-breaking participation of 250,000 women on a single day, marking a significant milestone in promoting gender equality in sports.
Key operational details include:
- Each of the 250 venues will be staffed with 5 technical officials, 10 volunteers, one competition manager, one Past Champion Athlete (PCA), and a District Youth Officer.
- The events will be implemented through collaboration with MY Bharat, Khelo India Centres (KICs), the Sports Authority of India (SAI) ecosystem, National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs), State and District Sports Associations, and District Youth Officers (DYOs).
- In North India alone, athletics events will be held at 60 centres across nine states, including Punjab (13 centres), Rajasthan (13), Uttarakhand (9), Himachal Pradesh (8), Haryana (7), and Jammu & Kashmir (5).
ASMITA: A Catalyst for Women's Sports Development
ASMITA, launched in 2021 as part of the Khelo India mission, is a gender-neutral initiative designed to boost women's participation in sports through leagues and competitions. It has already made substantial strides, with over 2,600 leagues conducted across 34 sports disciplines in more than 550 districts and 700 cities nationwide. Notably, the programme has reached remote regions such as Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram in the North-east, as well as areas previously affected by Naxalism, demonstrating its inclusive reach.
To date, more than 300,000 women have participated in ASMITA events, showcasing its effectiveness in talent identification and grassroots development. The upcoming International Women's Day league will further this mission by including women technical officials, developmental workshops, and training on Athletics Federation of India officiating norms, digital data upload, and competition documentation to enhance capacity building.
Strategic Vision for Future Sporting Events
Minister Khadse highlighted the broader strategic importance of this initiative in the context of India's sporting ambitions. As the country prepares for the Commonwealth Games 2030 and aspires to host the 2036 Olympic Games, he stressed that readiness must begin at the district level. "Hosting an Olympic Games requires more than infrastructure. It requires trained human resources in every district of India, certified technical officials, and administrative excellence. This International Women's Day initiative is part of that preparation," he stated.
The league will be organized in over 30 States and Union Territories, including those in the North-east, with the objective of encouraging girls from villages and small towns to pursue sports as a career, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision. By fostering a culture of sports at the grassroots, ASMITA aims to build a robust pipeline of talent and resources essential for India's future hosting of major international events.
