In a moment of immense pride for Banaras Hindu University, emerging boxer Varsha Singh has scripted history. The BA second-year student has become the first female pugilist from the university in nearly 15 years to earn a coveted spot at the senior national level elite women's boxing training camp.
A Journey Forged at the SAI Boxing Centre, BHU
Varsha's remarkable achievement is the fruit of relentless training under the expert guidance of university coaches at the SAI Boxing Centre located right on the BHU campus. Her selection came on the back of a powerful performance at the Women's State-Level Boxing Championship 2025, held at the KD Singh Babu Stadium in Lucknow. This performance secured her a berth in the special national camp, which is scheduled to run from December 25, 2025, to January 2, 2026.
University Hails a Revival of Sporting Excellence
The news has electrified the campus, creating an atmosphere of celebration. Professor Anupam Nema, General Secretary of the University Sports Board, highlighted the significance of this milestone. He stated that after a gap of nearly a decade and a half, the selection of a BHU girl student signals a revival of sporting excellence at the historic institution.
"Varsha's selection is not only the result of her sheer hard work but also a testament to BHU's robust sports infrastructure, effective training system, and the continuous support provided to our athletes," Prof. Nema said. "We are confident that Varsha will make her mark at the national level in the coming years."
Coaches' Guidance and Unwavering Dedication
Vaibhav Rai, the Boxing In-charge, credited the coaches of the SAI Centre, BHU, for playing a pivotal role in this historic outcome. He emphasized that years of consistent technical guidance and rigorous training have prepared athletes like Varsha to compete at the highest level. This achievement, he noted, is a direct result of the coaching staff's commitment combined with the athlete's own unwavering dedication.
An elated Varsha Singh shared her thoughts on this life-changing selection. "The coaches at the SAI Centre, BHU, and the unwavering support of the university made me technically and mentally strong," she said. "This achievement is the result of my coaches' guidance, the University's support, and continuous, grueling practice. My goal is now clear: to win national medals and bring pride to BHU and my coaches."
This breakthrough selection after a long hiatus is being seen as a beacon of inspiration for other aspiring athletes at the university, proving that with the right infrastructure and determination, BHU can once again become a powerhouse for nurturing national-level sporting talent.
