Australian cyclist Fergus Browning delivered a stunning performance in the Prologue race of the Pune Grand Tour on January 19. Representing the Terengganu Cycling Team from Malaysia, Browning completed the challenging 7.5-kilometer course in just 8 minutes, 5.89 seconds. His remarkable speed earned him the coveted Yellow Jersey, which he will proudly wear throughout the upcoming stages of this prestigious five-day event.
Harshveer Singh Sekhon Leads Indian Contingent
Among the home riders, Harshveer Singh Sekhon of the Indian National Team stood out as the fastest Indian competitor. He also claimed the impressive title of third-fastest Asian cyclist in the prologue. Sekhon finished the race with a time of 8 minutes, 42.07 seconds. This strong performance secured him the 26th starting position for Stage 1, giving him a favorable spot on the grid.
Vishwajeet Singh followed closely behind Sekhon, completing the prologue in 8 minutes, 47.33 seconds. His effort earned him the 35th starting position for the next stage. Naveen John also put in a solid ride, finishing in 8 minutes, 49.44 seconds. John will begin Stage 1 from the 43rd position on the starting grid.
International Riders Showcase Their Talent
Dylan Hopkins from Australia, who rides for Thailand's Roojai Insurance Winspace team, captured second place overall. Hopkins crossed the finish line with a time of 8 minutes, 6.33 seconds. Estonia's Andreas Miltiadis, representing the Quick Pro Team, took third place with a time of 8 minutes, 8.92 seconds.
Belgium's Yorben Lauryssen of Tarteletto-Isorex finished fourth, posting a time of 8 minutes, 11.49 seconds. Zeb Kyffin, another rider from the Terengganu team, completed the top five. Kyffin finished just seven seconds behind his teammate Browning. These top five riders will lead the peloton into Stage 1, enjoying the advantage of front-row starting positions.
Browning Shares His Race Strategy and Excitement
After his victory, Fergus Browning spoke enthusiastically about his prologue experience. "I went out pretty hard from the start," Browning explained. "With the downhill section leading to the finish, you simply try to hang on and push as fast as possible." The Australian cyclist expressed great excitement about the race ahead. "It was an amazing experience," he said. "I'm definitely looking forward to the hillier stages because I prefer the climbs. We will take it day by day and see how the rest of the race unfolds."
Prologue Sets the Stage for Grueling Competition
The Prologue stage officially launched the Pune Grand Tour, setting a high standard for the days to come. The route stretched from Goodluck Chowk to the Deccan Gymkhana bus stop, covering a fast and technical 7.5-kilometer circuit through Pune's streets. Unlike traditional mass-start stages, this prologue required intense focus and discipline. A total of 164 riders participated, each setting off individually at one-minute intervals to test their time-trial abilities.
Stage 1 Promises New Challenges
Attention now turns to Stage 1, scheduled for Tuesday. This stage, named the Mulshi–Maval Miles, will present a completely different challenge. Riders will roll out from TCS Circle in Hinjewadi Phase 3. The route spans 87.2 kilometers and features an elevation gain of 828 meters. It blends urban stretches with sharp turns and rolling terrain, promising an exciting and demanding day of racing.
