Coach Sarabjit Singh Happy Launches 'Shagun Scheme' to Support Athletes Financially
In a bid to remove financial barriers for young athletes, Sports Department coach Sarabjit Singh Happy, alongside 35 current and former trainees, has introduced the 'Shagun Scheme'. This initiative aims to cover travel, accommodation, and competition expenses for deserving players participating in national-level events.
Many athletes bear these costs themselves, placing a heavy burden on their families. Happy emphasized, "We do not want talented players to quit sports simply because their families cannot afford the costs involved." The scheme creates a common fund through contributions from coaches, athletes, and supporters.
Rs 50,000 Raised for Five Athletes Heading to Bhubaneswar
The initiative has already seen tangible results. One former athlete contributed Rs 13,000, and collective efforts raised Rs 50,000 to support five athletes: Harjit Singh, Maya, Jashan, Kulbir Ram, and Ritika. They will represent their state at the 65th National Inter-State Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar.
While tickets for Harjit Singh and Maya had been sponsored earlier, the Rs 50,000 fund covered travel tickets, accommodation, meals, and local transportation for the remaining athletes. To sustain the fund, athletes will contribute Rs 200 each, while coaches contribute Rs 500 before each tournament.
Focus on Key National Tournaments
Happy identified three critical competitions where athletes need support: inter-state championships, Open National Championships, and Junior National Championships. "The number of tournaments has increased now," he noted, stressing that players should compete without worrying about arranging money.
National-level athletes Maya and Harjit Singh expressed gratitude for the coach's foresight and support. Happy hopes the "spirit of giving" will extend to sports, encouraging more people to contribute. "People here are very generous," he said, urging broader community involvement to help talented youngsters achieve their dreams.
