French footballer Tahirys Dos Santos made an emotional public appearance with his girlfriend Coline months after surviving the deadly fire at the Le Constellation nightclub in Crans-Montana, Switzerland. The 19-year-old, who plays for FC Metz, suffered serious burns on nearly 30 percent of his body during the tragedy that killed at least 41 people and injured more than 100 others.
Emotional Reunion at UNFP Awards
The couple appeared together at the UNFP Awards in Paris, where they presented the women's Player of the Year award to Melchie Dumornay. As they walked on stage in matching black outfits, many people in the audience stood up and applauded them. Their burn scars could clearly be seen on their hands and arms, showing the painful injuries they survived.
Details of the Tragic Fire
The nightclub fire happened at Le Constellation in the ski town of Crans-Montana. According to witnesses, the fire started after a waitress waved a sparkler attached to a champagne bottle while sitting on another worker's shoulders. The sparkler reportedly touched the ceiling, and flames quickly spread through the mostly wooden basement area. Panic followed within seconds as people rushed toward a single narrow staircase, which was the only exit.
Swiss authorities later confirmed the fire started in the basement. Police commander Frederic Gisler said a crush happened as terrified people tried to escape through the staircase. Swiss president Guy Parmelin called it "one of the worst tragedies our country has experienced."
Heroic Rescue and Recovery
While recovering in hospital, Tahirys Dos Santos shared his terrifying experience with Paris Match. He explained that he and Coline had gone downstairs because she needed to use the restroom. "We went downstairs because Coline had to go to the toilet," he said. "So I went with her and took the opportunity to go to the toilet too."
He then described how quickly everything changed. "It all happened very quickly, I didn't really think about it. I went straight to Coline, called her, she was in the toilet and we ran up the stairs," he said. After helping her escape, Dos Santos suffered severe burns and was later airlifted to hospital before being transferred to a burns center in Stuttgart, Germany.
His agent, Christophe Hutteau, told BFMTV that the young footballer was in "terrible pain" and confirmed he had burns covering 30 percent of his body. He also said Dos Santos' lungs had improved after initially being affected by smoke inhalation. Despite the trauma, the teenager has slowly returned to football. Dos Santos returned to action for FC Metz in April and recently signed his first professional contract with the French club.
