This emotional goodbye came on the heels of a major career milestone: securing a lucrative $22 million contract with the crosstown rival New York Mets.
A Journey of Struggle and Revival in New York
Weaver's message was deeply personal, reflecting on a career that once seemed on the brink of ending. "From my career coming to what felt like an end and overwhelmed with injuries and failure… it seemed destined that the next chapter of my life was within reach," Weaver wrote. "The Lord had other plans for me and they were bigger than I could have asked for." Back in 2011, he was initially selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 19th round of the MLB Draft. Choosing to bet on his own development, Weaver opted not to sign and instead attended Florida State University.
That gamble paid off. In 2014, he re-entered the draft and his stock soared; he was chosen in the first round, 27th overall, by the St. Louis Cardinals. The expectations were immediate as he progressed through the minor league system. Weaver finally made his much-anticipated MLB debut on August 13, 2016, against the Chicago Cubs.

While his early outings showed flashes of promise, finding consistent success as a starter proved challenging. By 2018, the Cardinals transitioned him to the bullpen, seeking the best role for his skills. Another pivotal moment arrived before the 2019 season, when Weaver was part of a major trade that sent star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt to St. Louis, with Weaver heading to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
