Global Chess League Season 4 Draft Announced
The Global Chess League (GCL), a joint venture between Tech Mahindra and FIDE, will hold its Season 4 Player Draft in Mumbai on June 29, 2026. The league itself will take place in Bengaluru from September 3 to 13. The draft marks the return of world number one Magnus Carlsen after a one-season absence and the debut of reigning FIDE Women's World Cup champion Divya Deshmukh.
Star-Studded Player Pool
The Season 4 player pool includes 36 Grandmasters, featuring World Champions, World Cup winners, Olympiad medallists, and top names from the global chess circuit. The marquee list includes five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand, 2025 FIDE World Cup winner Javokhir Sindarov, Women's World Rapid Champion Koneru Humpy, former Women's World Champion Alexandra Kosteniuk, World Championship challenger Ian Nepomniachtchi, and former World Cup champion Levon Aronian. Emerging stars like reigning World Rapid Champion Volodar Murzin and Indian Grandmaster Leon Luke Mendonca are also in the pool.
Franchise Composition and Format
Teams will assemble six-player squads across four categories: one Icon, two Superstar Men, two Superstar Women, and one Prodigy. The league uses a six-board rapid format where every board carries equal significance. The six franchises are upGrad Mumba Masters, Fyers American Gambits, Ganges Grandmasters, Triveni Continental Kings, PBG Alaskan Knights, and Alpine APL Pipers.

Season 3 Recap and Innovations
Season 3, hosted in India for the first time, set new benchmarks with AI-powered in-arena innovations, enhanced broadcast experiences, and the expansion of GCL Contenders, a global talent pathway initiative. The season concluded with Alpine SG Pipers winning the championship after a dominant final performance.
