Motorsports Community Unites in Chandigarh to Pay Tribute to Rally Icon Hari Singh
In a poignant display of respect and remembrance, family members and the motorsports fraternity assembled at the Sector 8 gurdwara in Chandigarh on Monday to honor the life and enduring legacy of rally legend Hari Singh. This solemn gathering came just days after an intensive eight-day search and rescue operation in the Maldives was officially called off on March 28, marking a somber conclusion to efforts to locate the missing champion.
A Towering Figure in Indian Motorsports
Hari Singh, a towering figure in Indian motorsports renowned as the "Gypsy King," was a five-time Indian National Rally Championship winner whose influence extended far beyond the racetrack. He went missing following a maritime accident, and despite exhaustive efforts spanning more than a week, hopes of finding him eventually faded, leaving the community in mourning.
The prayer meeting saw a sombre gathering of members from across the racing community, reflecting Singh's immense impact on the sport. Leading figures from Indian motorsports were present, including WRC driver Gaurav Gill, Autocar India editor Hormazd Sorabjee, and Jayesh Desai, president of Northern Motorsports. Representing the Fédération of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) were Farokh Commissariat and Raj Kapoor.
Rally Stalwarts and Close Associates Pay Respects
Rally stalwarts such as Nikhil Taneja, Nawaz Sandhu, Farad Bathena, and Koka Rao were also among those who attended, alongside Singh's longtime navigator Bittoo Mann and fellow racer Amanpreet Ahluwalia. Old Sanawarians turned up in large numbers to remember one of their own, with his junior, Durgesh Tuknayat, noting, "Such were his achievements that not only his batchmates, but seniors and juniors across generations were present — all still struggling to come to terms with the loss."
Those attending the prayer meeting echoed a shared sentiment — that a fierce competitor and fighter like Singh would want to be remembered with faith and resolve. They emphasized that Hari Singh didn't just drive rallies; he drove the sport forward, leaving an indelible mark on Indian motorsports.
