NCC Kayak Club Inaugurated at Varanasi's Assi Ghat

In a significant step towards promoting adventure sports and environmental stewardship, the 7 UP Naval Unit NCC of Banaras Hindu University established a new Kayak Club at the historic Assi Ghat in Varanasi. The club was officially inaugurated on Monday by Deputy Commander Colonel V S Shankhla, marking a new chapter for naval training and youth engagement in the city.

Launch Ceremony and Leadership Vision

The inauguration event saw enthusiastic participation from a large contingent of NCC cadets. Addressing the gathering, Colonel V S Shankhla underscored the critical role of naval training and adventure sports in molding future leaders. He elaborated on how disciplines like kayaking instill essential qualities in young individuals.

"The Kayak Club will actively promote water sports and offer practical training that builds discipline, courage, teamwork, and leadership among our cadets," Col Shankhla stated. He further emphasized that kayaking is not just a physical activity but a holistic exercise that enhances physical fitness, mental fortitude, and self-confidence.

Beyond Sports: A Platform for Community and Conservation

The vision for the club extends far beyond recreational kayaking. It is designed to evolve into a multifunctional platform for community-oriented activities. Future plans include initiatives focused on water safety, river cleanliness, and environmental conservation specifically for the Ganga.

This broader mission aims to directly benefit the local community in Varanasi, intertwining youth development with civic responsibility towards the holy river. The club's objectives align with national efforts to preserve and clean the Ganga.

Demonstration and Safety Training

Following the flag-off ceremony, the event featured an impressive kayaking demonstration by NCC cadets on the waters of the Ganga, showcasing their budding skills. Integral to the launch was a comprehensive briefing conducted by the permanent instructional staff and instructors.

Cadets were thoroughly trained on crucial aspects including:

  • Water safety measures and protocols.
  • Correct usage of life jackets and safety gear.
  • Emergency rescue procedures.

Furthermore, the cadets were sensitized about the paramount importance of river conservation, maintaining the cleanliness of the Ganga, and adhering to safe navigation practices.

The launch event was well-attended by officers from the 7 UP Naval Unit NCC, PI staff, and NCC cadets representing various colleges and universities. A sizable number of local citizens and students were also present, witnessing the birth of this new initiative that promises to blend adventure, discipline, and environmental care on the banks of the Ganga.
