Sports Ministry Defers NSF Elections to Dec 2026, BCCI, AIFF Affected
NSF Elections Postponed to December 2026 by Sports Ministry

In a significant administrative move, the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has officially postponed the upcoming elections for the country's National Sports Federations (NSFs). The deferral extends until December 2026, permitting the current office-bearers to remain in their positions even if their electoral terms are set to conclude earlier.

Major Federations Granted Extension

This decision impacts some of India's most prominent sports bodies. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the All India Football Federation (AIFF), and the Badminton Association of India (BAI) are among the key federations that will now postpone their elections, which were originally due in 2026, until the end of that year. Other federations like the Equestrian Federation of India (EFI) and the Billiards and Snooker Federation of India (BSFI) are also included in this list.

Reason: Alignment with New Sports Governance Law

The ministry's order, a copy of which is available with media outlets, cites the need for a substantial transition period as the primary reason. Federations require time to implement sweeping statutory, structural, and procedural changes to their constitutions and bye-laws. This preparation is essential for the effective adoption of the National Sports Governance (NSG) Act, 2025, which received the assent of President Droupadi Murmu on August 18, 2024.

The official order states that compliance with the new Act necessitates adequate time for NSFs to establish robust electoral structures and procedures. It mandates that every NSF must undertake measures to restructure its general body and ensure all voting members and affiliate units are fully aligned with the provisions of the forthcoming law.

Implications and Next Steps

The deferral essentially provides a blanket extension, ensuring stability and continuity in sports administration during this transitional phase. It acknowledges the complex legal and administrative overhaul required to meet the new governance standards set by the NSG Act. Once the Act and its accompanying rules are formally notified, they will govern all aspects of NSF functioning, from elections to financial management and transparency norms.

This move also affects federations like Judo, Karate, Taekwondo, Handball, and Gymnastics, where election-related matters are currently sub-judice in various courts. The extension allows for a uniform implementation timeline across the sports ecosystem in India.
