Edmonton Oilers Face Critical Offseason After Playoff Exit, Draisaitl Voices Concerns
Oilers Face Critical Offseason After Playoff Exit

The Edmonton Oilers are facing a critical offseason after a shocking first-round playoff elimination. The team lost to the Anaheim Ducks in Game 6, making an early exit from the playoffs, which has raised questions about the Oilers' direction.

Meanwhile, star forward Leon Draisaitl did not hide his frustration over the team's trajectory and admitted that he was indeed very concerned about the Oilers' situation. According to reports, the Oilers entered the playoffs with Stanley Cup aspirations but were eliminated in six games by a Ducks team making its first postseason appearance in years.

Draisaitl Emphasizes Need for Improvement

As the Edmonton Oilers head into a turbulent offseason after their unexpected first-round playoff elimination, the star forward has opened up about the team's exit from the playoffs and what went wrong with the team's performance. He has also expressed his concern about their wrong direction, which led them to face defeat against the Anaheim Ducks.

Speaking during the team's end-of-season media availability, Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl was asked whether he took note of how the team is trending after being eliminated in the Pacific Division Semifinals by the Anaheim Ducks. To this, he stated, "I am concerned because we're not trending in the right direction. We've taken big steps backwards. We've got to get a grip of this and head back in the right direction."

Further, he added that the Oilers weren't doing a good enough job of properly winning games. "We go into every game, and we try to do it right. We say the right things. I think you really have to, in the regular season, form these moments. You have to get comfortable in these moments. We didn't do that this year. It ended up showing in the first round here," Draisaitl stated.

Lack of Depth Scoring and Defensive Weaknesses

He further mentioned that this year's team lacked depth scoring, and the reason the team performed well during its run to the 2024 final was that its entire roster was involved, helping the team in different ways. The forward also emphasized that the Oilers need to upgrade their level of play if they want to reach their ultimate goal.

It is to be noted that Draisaitl remained one of Edmonton's top performers despite dealing with injury issues late in the year. He scored twice in Game 5 to keep the Oilers alive, but Edmonton failed to perform well. In the six-game series, Anaheim's speed, structure, and opportunistic offense repeatedly exposed Edmonton's defensive weaknesses.
