Rajasthan's Rishina Sharma Makes History as Baran's First Woman Flying Officer in IAF
In a landmark achievement for gender equality and regional pride, Rishina Sharma of Alipur village in Baran district, Rajasthan, has become the district's first woman to be commissioned as a flying officer in the technical branch of the Indian Air Force. She graduated at the passing-out parade on Saturday, March 7, a date that serendipitously coincided with International Women's Day celebrations, adding symbolic weight to her accomplishment.
From Childhood Dream to Reality: A Journey of Perseverance
In a heartfelt video message, Sharma expressed her elation, stating, "Finally, I passed out as a flying officer and was commissioned in the technical branch of the Indian Air Force on March 7." Raised in a joint family, her ambition to serve in uniform was ignited after watching the Republic Day parade as a child. "Joining the Indian Army was my passion since childhood, but there was no provision for the admission of girls in NDA during those days, so I joined the National Cadets Corps (NCC) in college to pursue the dream," she recounted.
Her path to the IAF was not without challenges. During the second year of her graduation, friends suggested she prepare for the Combined Defence Services (CDS) and Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) exams. "When I was eligible for the exam after four years, I cleared the SSB written exam in the first attempt and subsequently the five-day-long exhausting interview also," Sharma said, highlighting her determination. She candidly added, "My journey began in 2022, and I faced several failures during the period," underscoring the resilience required to achieve her goal.
Educational and Professional Background: A Foundation for Success
Sharma's academic and professional journey laid a strong foundation for her military career. She completed her early schooling at St Paul's School in Baran and earned a BTech in Information Science and Engineering from Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology, Bengaluru, from 2018 to 2022. Following her graduation, she worked for two years as a cyber security officer in a multinational company, gaining valuable technical expertise.
As an NCC cadet in college, she earned the prestigious C certificate, which honed her leadership and discipline skills. Selected through the Services Selection Board exam for the post of flying officer, she underwent rigorous training: six months of initial training at the Air Force Academy in Hyderabad, followed by nine months of technical training at the Air Force Technical College in Jalahalli. She is now posted in New Delhi as a flying officer, ready to contribute to the nation's defense.
Family Support and Community Celebrations
Sharma's achievement has brought immense joy to her family and community. Her father, Harish Sharma, is an assistant engineer with Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited, and her mother, Neha Sharma, is a senior teacher at a government Senior Secondary School. Celebrations erupted in Alipur village and across Baran district after the commissioning. Her uncle, Dharmendra Sharma, shared, "The entire family is filled with exuberance and enthusiasm over Rishina's achievement, and celebrations are going on," reflecting the collective pride in her historic milestone.
