Outgoing United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer captured the nation's relief and optimism after England staged a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 on Wednesday. The Three Lions were minutes from elimination before captain Harry Kane scored twice in the final 15 minutes to turn the match around.
Starmer and Sunak react to England's escape
Following the final whistle, Starmer posted on X: "It might actually be coming home," echoing the famous English football anthem. Former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also praised the team's resilience, writing: "Brilliant from England tonight. Huge credit to Harry Kane and the whole team for showing that fight right to the end."
The upbeat reactions contrasted sharply with the anxiety that gripped fans for most of the match. DR Congo, playing in their first-ever World Cup knockout fixture, stunned England in the seventh minute when Brian Cipenga scored his first international goal from close range after a swift flank move, giving the African underdogs an early lead.
England's struggle and Kane's rescue
For over an hour, England's tournament survival hung by a thread. Despite dominating possession, they struggled to break down a disciplined Congolese defence. DR Congo effectively pressed England's midfielders, leaving goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi largely untested in the first half.
Manager Thomas Tuchel made changes after the hour mark, introducing Anthony Gordon, Bukayo Saka, and later Eberechi Eze to overload the Congolese defence. The pressure finally paid off in the 75th minute when Kane pounced on a loose ball inside the six-yard box to equalise. With extra time looming, Kane struck again in the 86th minute to complete his brace and seal the comeback.
Next match against Mexico
England safely defended their lead through stoppage time and advanced to the Round of 16. They will face tournament co-hosts Mexico on Sunday, July 5, at 8:00 p.m. ET at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, with a quarterfinal spot at stake.
