Varanasi Municipal Corporation to Develop International Basketball Courts
In a significant boost to sports infrastructure, the Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC) has announced plans to establish international-level basketball courts for both men and women players. This initiative is directly inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's flagship campaigns, Khelo India and Fit India, which aim to promote sports participation and fitness across the nation.
Mayor Ashok Tiwari's Vision for Equal Opportunities
Mayor Ashok Tiwari emphasized that this project aligns with PM Modi's resolve to ensure sports facilities are accessible to all and that every athlete receives equal opportunities. "Many initiatives have already been undertaken, and now we are addressing the needs of emerging basketball players," Tiwari stated. He added, "For those budding basketball talents seeking a quality platform, the VMC is bringing an international-standard court to the JP Mehta Inter College Ground. Construction will commence on a war-footing once the design is finalized."
Project Approval and Swift Implementation
Following the green signal from the VMC's executive committee, Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal conducted an inspection of the JP Mehta Inter College Ground. He directed officials to implement this project at the earliest possible date. The VMC's general engineering department has already initiated work, focusing on preparing detailed drawings and designs with expert assistance.
World-Class Facilities Planned
The basketball court will be developed according to stringent international standards, featuring:
- A high-quality synthetic surface for optimal play
- Advanced floodlighting systems for evening matches
- Proper seating arrangements to accommodate spectators
- Changing rooms and other basic infrastructure for the convenience and safety of male and female players
Strategic Location and Cultural Impact
Located in the heart of the city, the JP Mehta Ground has long been a preferred practice venue for basketball enthusiasts. This new facility is expected to not only provide local players with a superior training environment but also foster a renewed sports culture in Varanasi. By offering a professional-grade court, the project aims to nurture talent and encourage greater community engagement in basketball, contributing to the broader goals of national fitness and athletic excellence.
