Varanasi's Historic Horse Racing Event Draws Massive Crowd
In a landmark event for the ancient city, Varanasi recently hosted its first horse racing competition in recent years, drawing an enthusiastic crowd of over 5,000 spectators. The Babu RN Singh Memorial Horse Racing Competition, organized by Vikas Inter College, not only provided thrilling entertainment but also signaled a promising new direction for adventure sports in Kashi.
Transforming a Stadium into a Race Course
The mini stadium ground at Parmanandpur was completely transformed into a vibrant race course for this special occasion. The presence of thousands of students and sports enthusiasts created an electric atmosphere that made the event truly memorable. Throughout the competition, spectators standing around the entire ground continuously cheered and applauded the horse riders, amplifying the excitement and creating a festival-like environment.
Three-Phase Competition Format
The competition was organized in an exciting three-phase format designed to maximize suspense and competition:
- First and Second Rounds: Each round featured five horse riders competing in a challenging race of 5 laps
- Qualification System: The top two horse riders from both initial rounds secured coveted spots in the final round
- Final Showdown: The decisive contest featured a long and demanding race of six laps to determine the winner, runner-up, and third-place finisher
Thrilling Race Results and Winning Horses
In the thrilling 4-kilometer final race, Hari Narayan's Rajasthani breed horse named 'Shakti' demonstrated exceptional speed and stamina, staying ahead of all competitors throughout the contest. Shakti completed the challenging race in an impressive time of just 2 minutes and 28 seconds to secure the first position.
Gaurav Yadav's horse 'Rocket' claimed second place with a time of 3 minutes and 40 seconds, while Saurabh's horse 'Sheru' finished in third position with a time of 4 minutes. Interestingly, the horses finishing in second and third positions were both of the distinguished Marwari breed, adding an interesting dimension to the competition between different horse breeds.
Dignitaries and Official Support
The competition received official recognition and support from prominent sports figures. Asha Singh, president of the Uttar Pradesh Adventure Sports Club, had the honor of flagging off the competition by showing the green flag, officially commencing the races.
The event was further dignified by the presence of District Olympic Association Secretary Shams Tabrez Shaimpu and divisional sports secretary Rajesh Singh Dohri, whose attendance underscored the significance of this sporting initiative for the region.
This successful event has potentially opened new avenues for adventure sports in Varanasi, demonstrating both public interest and organizational capability for such unique sporting competitions in the historic city.
