French prosecutors have confirmed that former Olympic swimming champion Yannick Agnel will face trial for serious criminal charges. The Colmar-based prosecutor general's office announced this decision on Thursday, January 15. This development has sent shockwaves through the international sports community.

In May of last year, a Mulhouse public prosecutor confirmed that Agnel would be sent to trial before the Haut-Rhin criminal court. The victim's lawyer welcomed this decision, telling Le Monde newspaper that "a 23-year-old man cannot have sexual relations with a 13-year-old child."

He added, "On the other hand it's hard not being at the same level as before. It's complicated, but I've been through so much over the last four years. Choices I do not regret at all because they brought me good things, but athletically, it's more difficult. I'm feeling old."
