Lakshya Sen's Valiant All England Effort Falls Short Due to Physical Struggles
In a heartbreaking repeat of his 2022 runner-up finish, Indian badminton star Lakshya Sen came agonizingly close to All England Championship glory, only to be thwarted by his own body in Sunday's final in Birmingham. Despite battling through blisters and severe fatigue, the 24-year-old put up a fierce fight before succumbing 15-21, 20-22 to Chinese Taipei's Lin Chun-Yi in a grueling 57-minute contest.
A Battle of Endurance and Strategy
The match unfolded as a high-speed duel of relentless attacking play and exhausting rallies. Playing his second All England final, Sen appeared to have recovered from Saturday's draining semifinal victory over Canada's Victor Lai, but the painful blisters on his right foot severely limited his mobility. His inability to dive effectively on the right flank became a strategic weakness that Lin, a left-handed player, exploited with precision.
As his mentor Vimal Kumar had noted before the match, Sen was 100% mentally prepared but only 60% physically fit. This disparity proved decisive as the Indian shuttler visibly ran out of steam, bearing the cumulative toll of spending over five hours on court throughout the tournament.
The Match Breakdown: Moments of Brilliance Amidst Struggle
Lin dominated the opening set with a clear game plan: target Sen's compromised right side and wear him down through extended rallies. The Chinese Taipei player built an early 4-1 lead, maintained a two-point advantage at the interval (11-9), and unleashed powerful cross-court smashes to extend to 15-10. Though Sen briefly narrowed the gap to 13-16, Lin surged ahead to take the set 21-15.
The second game showcased Sen's fighting spirit as he mounted a remarkable comeback. Executing brilliant smashes and breathtaking drops, he led for the first time in the match and extended his advantage to 10-5. However, Lin regained composure and momentum, leveling the score at 14-14 and setting up a nail-biting finish.
At 18-18, Lin delivered a spectacular round-the-head shot, which Sen countered with a smash to make it 19-19. The Indian saved a match point at 19-20 but ultimately misread a return at 20-21, sending the shuttle wide to concede the championship.
Emotional Aftermath and Historical Context
An emotional Sen reflected afterward, "I'm pretty emotional right now to think about the match. It was a good match. In the first set, he was a better player. I could have finished the second set better. But I am happy with the way I played the whole week." He acknowledged his physical limitations, adding, "My physical condition was not ideal but to be honest, when I was playing, I did not think about anything but to give my best on the court. Yesterday, I was struggling with cramps. Though I got some time to recover, I could not recover 100%."
Lin's victory marked a historic milestone as he became the first Chinese Taipei shuttler to win the All England singles title. This achievement followed compatriots Ye Hong Wei and Nicole Gonzales Chan becoming the first unseeded duo to claim the All England mixed doubles crown earlier in the tournament.
Sen's journey to the final, despite his physical setbacks, underscores his resilience and competitive spirit. His performance throughout the week demonstrated why he remains one of India's premier badminton talents, even as this latest near-miss adds another chapter to his quest for a major title.
