Ravichandran Ashwin, the veteran Indian off-spinner, has added his voice to the ongoing debate surrounding the selection of wicketkeeper-batters Ishan Kishan and Rishabh Pant for the ODI World Cup 2027. Ashwin emphasized the importance of a balanced squad and highlighted the distinct strengths each player brings to the table.
Ashwin's Perspective on the Wicketkeeper Battle
Speaking exclusively to India TV, Ashwin stated, “Both Ishan and Rishabh are exceptional talents. Ishan has shown remarkable consistency in ODIs, while Rishabh’s explosive batting can change the course of a match. The decision will depend on the team combination and the conditions.”
Ashwin further noted that the team management should consider the batting depth and the need for a left-handed option in the middle order. “Ishan provides a left-hand option, which is valuable, but Rishabh’s aggressive style can put pressure on the opposition. It’s a good headache to have,” he added.
Recent Performances and Future Prospects
Ishan Kishan has been in stellar form, scoring heavily in recent ODI series, including a double century against Bangladesh. Rishabh Pant, on the other hand, has been working on his fitness and form after a comeback from injury. Both have been part of India’s plans for the 2027 World Cup, with selectors looking to build a strong core.
Ashwin also stressed the importance of a settled lineup. “Consistency in selection is key. The players need to know their roles well in advance. The World Cup is a long tournament, and having a clear plan is crucial,” he said.
Team India's Preparations for 2027
With the 2027 ODI World Cup scheduled to be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, India is already laying the groundwork. The team has a packed schedule of bilateral series and tournaments leading up to the mega event. Ashwin, who is expected to be part of the squad, expressed confidence in the team’s depth.
“We have a pool of talented players. The competition for spots is healthy and will only make the team stronger. The management has done a great job in creating a robust system,” he concluded.
