Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel offered a blunt assessment of his team's performance after they suffered a shocking defeat to Punjab Kings despite posting a massive total of 264 runs while batting first in the Indian Premier League match on Tuesday.
Axar's Honest Admission
Speaking at the post-match presentation, Axar said, "I feel we deserved to lose. When you score 264 runs, you expect to win, but our bowling and fielding let us down badly. We didn't execute our plans, and the opposition played exceptionally well."
The Capitals' total was the second-highest in IPL history, but Punjab Kings chased it down with 4 balls to spare, thanks to a blistering century from Jonny Bairstow and a quickfire 50 from Sam Curran.
Bowling Woes
Axar highlighted the lack of discipline in bowling. "We gave away too many extras and bowled loose deliveries. On a flat pitch, you need to hit the right lengths, but we failed to do that consistently." The Capitals bowlers conceded 20 wides and 3 no-balls, which proved costly.
Fielding Lapses
He also pointed out dropped catches and misfields. "We dropped two crucial catches, and that cost us the game. In T20 cricket, you can't afford such mistakes, especially when defending a high total."
Punjab's Brilliant Chase
Punjab Kings' chase was led by Jonny Bairstow's 108 off 48 balls, which included 12 fours and 6 sixes. Sam Curran supported with 63 off 32 balls. The pair added 138 runs for the second wicket to put Punjab in control.
Despite the loss, Axar remained optimistic about the rest of the season. "We have to learn from this and move forward. The batting unit is in good form, but we need to improve our bowling and fielding drastically."
Delhi Capitals will next face Mumbai Indians on Saturday, where they will look to bounce back from this demoralizing defeat.
