Babar Azam Reappointed as Pakistan Test Captain
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reinstated Babar Azam as the Test captain for the upcoming two-match series against West Indies, scheduled to begin in August 2026. The decision comes after a period of deliberation following Pakistan's recent performances in the longest format.
Shan Masood Steps Down
The previous captain, Shan Masood, stepped down after a string of disappointing results, including a 2-0 series loss to South Africa and a 1-1 draw against Bangladesh. According to PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, the board felt that a change in leadership was necessary to revitalize the team ahead of the World Test Championship cycle.
Babar's Previous Tenure
Babar Azam had previously captained Pakistan in 20 Test matches, winning 10, losing 6, and drawing 4. He resigned from the role in November 2024 to focus on his batting, but has now agreed to return. "Babar is the best batsman in the side, and his leadership experience will be crucial for the team's morale," said Naqvi.
West Indies Series Details
The two Test matches against West Indies will be played in Rawalpindi and Karachi. Pakistan is looking to build momentum for the 2027 World Test Championship. The squad announcement is expected later this month.
Impact on Team Dynamics
Babar's return is expected to stabilize the batting order, which has struggled in recent series. He will also work closely with head coach Jason Gillespie to develop a consistent playing XI.
