Cabo Verde's Vozinha Overtakes Casillas as Most Followed Goalkeeper on Social Media
Cabo Verde's Vozinha Becomes Most Followed Goalkeeper on Social Media

Cabo Verde's veteran goalkeeper Vozinha has achieved a remarkable milestone by overtaking Spanish legend Iker Casillas to become the most followed goalkeeper on social media. The 40-year-old's Instagram following surged from approximately 18 million to over 25 million after his team's narrow 3-2 loss to defending champions Argentina in the round of 32, according to Brazilian outlet O Globo.

Vozinha's Social Media Rise

Vozinha's follower count began climbing after a goalless draw against Spain in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Prior to the Argentina clash, he had around 18 million followers on Instagram. The match against the world champions propelled him past Casillas, who has about 20.4 million followers, and other top goalkeepers including Thibaut Courtois (18 million), Emiliano Martinez (15.1 million), and Manuel Neuer (14.9 million).

The top 10 most followed goalkeepers now includes Costa Rica's Keylor Navas (19 million), Germany's Marc-Andre ter Stegen (16.7 million), Spain's David de Gea (15.1 million), Italy's Gianluigi Buffon (10.9 million), and Brazil's Alisson Becker (9.1 million), as per O Globo.

Outstanding Performance at the World Cup

Vozinha made 18 saves in the tournament, conceding only five goals. According to OptaJoe, only two goalkeepers aged 40 or older have registered more saves at a single World Cup: Peter Shilton (28 in 1990 for England) and Dino Zoff (27 in 1982 for Italy).

Cabo Verde, making their World Cup debut, remained unbeaten against three former world champions: Spain (2010 champions), Uruguay (two-time champions), and Argentina (defending champions). They drew three matches and lost one, scoring four goals and conceding five.

From Obscurity to Stardom

Before the World Cup, Vozinha played for Chaves in the second tier of Portuguese football. His performances have now made him the most followed goalkeeper globally and a potential free-agent target for European clubs ahead of the new season. His journey from relative obscurity to social media sensation highlights the impact of the World Cup stage.

"These moments will undoubtedly guide a new generation of Cabo Verde footballers, particularly towards goalkeeping," noted a report from the tournament. Vozinha's rise underscores how exceptional performances can capture global attention and transform a player's career overnight.
