Deschamps Expresses Full Confidence in Argentine Refereeing Crew
France head coach Didier Deschamps has dismissed concerns over the appointment of an all-Argentine officiating team for his side's FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinal against Morocco. Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated clash in Boston, Deschamps stated that his team's focus remains solely on their opponent, not the match officials. "We have to deal with it. I trust the referees. Our opponent is Morocco, not the referee," Deschamps said, as quoted by ESPN.
High-Stakes Quarterfinal: France vs Morocco Rematch
The quarterfinal is a repeat of the 2022 semifinal, where France defeated Morocco 2-0. Morocco, the first African nation to reach the World Cup semifinals in 2022, has already eliminated the Netherlands in a penalty shootout during the round of 32. Led by Achraf Hakimi, Morocco aims to upset a formidable French side that boasts the tournament's most potent attack. France has scored 14 goals so far, the highest of any team in the competition, powered by Kylian Mbappe, hat-trick hero Ousmane Dembele, assist-machine Michael Olise, and Bradley Barcola.
Argentina-France Rivalry Adds Extra Edge
The appointment of Argentine officials—including referee Facundo Tello, assistants, a reserve assistant, and a fourth official—has sparked debate, given the intense rivalry between France and Argentina since the 2022 final. In that match, Lionel Messi-led Argentina defeated France despite a hat-trick from Mbappe. Backup goalkeeper Robin Risser acknowledged the "certain bitterness" between the nations but dismissed any concerns about bias. "There has been a certain bitterness for a few years now since the last final, but that's part of the game. If these referees are there, it is because they're up to the level of the competition," Risser said.
Refereeing Controversies in the Tournament
Officiating has been under scrutiny throughout the tournament, most notably during Argentina's round of 16 comeback against Egypt. Argentina overturned a 2-0 deficit in 13 minutes to win 3-2, a result that sparked outrage from Egypt's camp. Forward Mostafa Zico and head coach Hossam Hassan criticized the referees, with Hassan alleging the tournament was "fixed." Deschamps, however, took a subtle jab at such criticism, saying, "Let us hope our officials are as good as Monsieur Letexier (referee for Argentina-Egypt clash) was."
France's Unstoppable Attack vs Morocco's Resilience
France enters the quarterfinal as the tournament's top scorers, with Mbappe leading a devastating frontline. Morocco, known for their defensive organization and counter-attacking prowess, will rely on Hakimi and their disciplined backline to contain the French onslaught. The match promises to be a thrilling encounter, with both teams in excellent form and a place in the semifinals at stake.
