The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) has finalized a traffic circulation study for the upcoming international cricket stadium in Morti, designed to accommodate 40,000 spectators. The study identifies major traffic bottlenecks and outlines parking requirements, with nearly 69 acres allocated for four parking zones near the venue.
Traffic Challenges and Solutions
The study highlights that roads leading to the stadium, expected to attract spectators from Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Greater Noida, Meerut, Sonipat, and Bulandshahr, are currently hampered by multiple T-junctions and multimodal congestion. This issue is likely to worsen with increased traffic flow. Key junctions require redesign and proper channelization to manage the influx. The study emphasizes the need for well-planned entry and exit points to prevent traffic spillback.
Parking Zones Identified
Four areas have been designated for parking lots within a 2 to 5 km radius of the stadium:
- Premium Parking Zone: 10 hectares near Aero City in Morta, approximately 2 km from the stadium.
- Second Parking Slot: Within 4 km near City Forest along Bhatta Road.
- Third Parking Lot: Within 4.5 km near Harnandipuram township.
- Fourth Parking Lot: Near Shaheed Sthal New Bus Adda metro station, 5 km away, already featuring an operational multi-level parking facility.
Spectator Arrival Predictions
The study estimates that out of 40,000 spectators, around 18,000 will arrive in 6,000 cars. Over 8,000 spectators will use 4,000 two-wheelers, requiring 1,333 equivalent car spaces (ECS). Additionally, 100 buses will ferry 4,000 spectators from the catchment area, occupying 300 ECS.
Vehicle-Free Zone and Accessibility
A 1 km vehicle-free zone around the stadium is proposed, allowing only pedestrian access. Wheelchairs for specially abled individuals and battery-operated golf carts will ensure last-mile connectivity. Dedicated support staff and accessible pathways will facilitate seamless movement.
Project Timeline and Collaboration
“The technical committee under the principal secretary has vetted the proposal, and we will present it to the chief minister soon,” said GDA vice chairperson Nand Kishor Kalal. “We hope that by Diwali this year the work will start, and in 18 months the city will have its cricket stadium.”
The Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) and GDA are jointly developing the Rs 450 crore stadium project. UPCA has purchased land parcels from farmers for Rs 70 crore, with GDA facilitating the deals.
