Hugo Broos confirms irreversible coaching retirement

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has confirmed that his decision to retire from full-time coaching is irreversible, following the country's historic run to the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Broos made the announcement in an interview with voetbalnieuws.be, as reported by Reuters, stating that while he may remain involved with the South African Football Association (SAFA) in a different capacity, his days as a coach are over.

Broos reaffirms retirement after World Cup exit

Broos had already indicated before the tournament that he would step down after the World Cup. After South Africa's elimination by co-hosts Canada in the Round of 32 on June 28, the 74-year-old Belgian coach reiterated his stance. "Will I continue as a coach after all? No, it is irreversible!" Broos said. He added that if SAFA needs him for something else, such as scouting, that is a different matter, but football will no longer dominate his life 24 hours a day.

SAFA seeks to retain Broos in advisory role

Broos revealed that he has already spoken with the SAFA chairman, who expressed a desire to keep him involved, possibly as an advisor or scout. "I will return at the end of July to say a final farewell. I am curious to see what he will propose to me," Broos said. He plans to discuss his future role and bid farewell to the team and federation at that time.

Legacy of five years with Bafana Bafana

Broos spent five years in charge of South Africa, becoming the country's longest-serving head coach. Under his leadership, Bafana Bafana qualified for their first FIFA World Cup in 16 years, ending a long drought. The team's performance in the 2026 tournament, reaching the knockout stage for the first time, marked a significant achievement for South African football. Broos' tenure is widely credited with revitalizing the national team and restoring its competitiveness on the global stage.
