IPL 2026: Rajasthan Royals' Home Stadium Faces Safety Audit Crisis
IPL 2026: SMS Stadium Safety Audit Crisis for Rajasthan Royals

IPL 2026 Season Looms as Rajasthan Royals' Home Stadium Grapples with Safety Audit Findings

JAIPUR: With the IPL 2026 season merely a month away, the traditional home ground of the Rajasthan Royals, the Sawai Mansingh (SMS) Stadium, remains embroiled in uncertainty. Stadium authorities are engaged in a frantic race against time to rectify alarming deficiencies uncovered by a recent independent audit report commissioned by the franchise. The comprehensive assessment has exposed severe shortcomings in the venue's capacity to safely accommodate large crowds, casting a shadow over upcoming matches.

Damning Audit Report Reveals Critical Safety Lapses

The Rajasthan Royals initiated a thorough third-party evaluation through Tata Projects to address persistent public safety concerns. The resulting 700-page audit report confirmed longstanding suspicions held by franchise officials, identifying critical failures across multiple safety parameters. The stadium was found to be non-compliant with minimum safety standards in life safety, structural integrity, and statutory adherence.

A source closely associated with the matter elaborated on the high-risk issues detailed in the extensive document. "Among the most urgent concerns are severe fire and life-safety violations, including the total absence of dedicated fire escape routes in VIP sections. Additionally, major portions of the spectator stands have exceeded their intended design lifespan, coupled with inadequate exit provisions, substandard earthing systems, and heightened risks of fire and electrocution," the source disclosed. These findings represent just a fraction of the deficiencies cataloged by the independent audit conducted by Tata Projects.

Proactive Measures and Government Response

In a proactive move, the Rajasthan Royals had formally requested permission from the Rajasthan State Sports Council (RSSC) on June 2 last year to conduct a structural integrity and health assessment of the stadium. This request came barely two days before a tragic stampede incident in Bangalore. "The franchise's letter explicitly stated their intention to engage a competent agency for an audit expected to span three to four weeks," the source added. A follow-up letter on September 12 reiterated the urgency, citing the Bangalore incident and emphasizing the need for a comprehensive safety review.

Permission was granted by the RSSC on November 28, leading to the audit being carried out from December 25 to January 26. "The evaluation was conducted in strict accordance with central government-established national regulatory codes, including the National Building Code, National Electric Code, Fire Code, and Safety Code in Sports Grounds," informed sources revealed.

State Government Assures BCCI of Stadium Safety

In a robust display of support for the stadium, Rajasthan Chief Secretary V. Srinivas has communicated directly with BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia. The letter assures that spectator safety and security are the state government's utmost priority. "In reference to the upcoming IPL season, it has come to my notice that Rajasthan Royals, the home franchise of Rajasthan, has raised certain concerns regarding the safety and security of SMS Stadium. I wish to reiterate that the safety and security of spectators is paramount for the state government. I would like to categorically state that there is no issue concerning the safety, security, or structural integrity of the stadium infrastructure," the correspondence states.

The letter further explains that the Government of Rajasthan established a high-level committee comprising senior professors from MNIT, senior state officials, PWD engineers, and other domain experts to scrutinize all safety and security aspects. "The committee has submitted its report and has found the stadium to be fully safe and secure. The committee has, however, made certain suggestions for minor improvements, and the government is fully committed to completing all recommended works well in time before the commencement of the IPL season," the letter mentions.

Authorities Confident in Timely Resolution

Defending the stadium amidst mounting safety concerns, RSSC Chairman Neeraj K. Pawan expressed confidence that the identified issues are manageable. "The issues identified are largely minor in nature and can be addressed promptly. This includes repairing and upgrading fire exits, strengthening structural safety in the South Block, further refining the evacuation plan, replacing outdated floodlights, fine-tuning seating arrangements, and improving alleys, walkways, and entry-exit points. We have ample time and resources to complete these works before the IPL season begins," Pawan asserted.

As the countdown to IPL 2026 intensifies, all stakeholders are closely monitoring the progress of these critical safety enhancements to ensure the Sawai Mansingh Stadium is fully prepared to host matches without compromising spectator welfare.
