In a significant crackdown on illegal betting activities during the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season, the Odisha Police busted a major betting racket in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday. The operation led to the seizure of Rs 6 lakh in cash and the arrest of five individuals allegedly involved in the illicit business.
Details of the Raid
Acting on a tip-off, a team from the Commissionerate Police conducted a raid at a location in the Kharavel Nagar area of Bhubaneswar. During the raid, the police apprehended five persons and recovered a substantial amount of cash, mobile phones, and other electronic devices used for placing bets on IPL matches.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Sushant Kumar Nayak, Subrat Kumar Sahoo, Bikash Chandra Nayak, Ashok Kumar Sahu, and Sanjay Kumar Sahu. They were found to be actively involved in accepting bets from customers through online platforms and mobile applications.
Modus Operandi
Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused had set up a sophisticated network to facilitate betting on IPL games. They used multiple mobile phones and SIM cards to communicate with clients and place bets on behalf of them. The racket was reportedly operating for several weeks, with a steady flow of clients placing bets on various aspects of the matches, including the outcome, top scorer, and other in-game events.
The police also seized several mobile phones, laptops, and other digital evidence that will be crucial in building a strong case against the accused. The authorities are now investigating the financial trail to identify other individuals who might have been part of the network.
Legal Action
The arrested individuals have been booked under sections of the Odisha Gambling Act and relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code. They were produced before a local court, which remanded them to judicial custody. The police have also launched a search for other suspects who may have been involved in the racket.
This is not the first such incident in Odisha during the IPL season. In recent years, the police have conducted several raids and arrested numerous individuals for their involvement in illegal betting activities. The state police have been particularly vigilant during major sporting events to curb the menace of gambling.
Public Advisory
The Commissionerate Police have urged the public to refrain from engaging in any form of illegal betting and to report any suspicious activities to the authorities. They have also warned that strict legal action will be taken against those found involved in such practices.
The crackdown on the betting racket is part of a larger effort by the Odisha Police to maintain law and order and prevent illegal activities during the IPL season. The police have assured the public that they will continue to monitor such activities and take necessary action to ensure a safe and secure environment.
