Iyer Praises Fearless Approach
India captain Shreyas Iyer lauded the fearless attitude and maturity of his young squad after securing a 3-0 T20I series victory over Zimbabwe. The 35-run win in the third and final match at Harare Sports Club on Sunday sealed India's first whitewash under Iyer's captaincy. Defending 192/5, India's bowlers restricted Zimbabwe to 157/7, completing a dominant campaign.
"This is a special feeling for me to win the series here in Zimbabwe. Clinical, 3-0. It's going to be a special moment," Iyer said at the post-match presentation. He highlighted the energy and intent shown by the team, especially in back-to-back games. "As we saw how fearless they are, they are a young bunch of players who have been showing tremendous energy on the field. To have such kind of energy is what I require as a captain, and they could deliver today as well."
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Shines Again
India's innings was anchored by 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who smashed 81 off 49 balls, including eight fours and four sixes. His knock propelled India to 192/5 after they opted to bat first. Ishan Kishan contributed 29, Iyer made 27 off 18 deliveries, and Rinku Singh added a quick 25 off 14 balls. The young batting lineup showcased depth and aggression, setting a challenging total.
Bowlers Dominate Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe's response got off to a disastrous start as Yash Thakur dismissed Brian Bennett with the first ball of the innings. Thakur then removed Dion Myers and Sikandar Raza in his opening spell to leave the hosts reeling. Mayank Yadav was the pick of the bowlers with 3/29, while Ravi Bishnoi and Ashok Sharma chipped in with a wicket each. Ryan Burl fought valiantly with an unbeaten 54, but Zimbabwe never recovered from the early blows, finishing 35 runs short.
The series win marks India's third successive T20I victory after six consecutive defeats on tours of Ireland and England. For Iyer, it's a winning start to his captaincy stint.
Iyer on Team Culture
Iyer emphasized the importance of players taking responsibility and remaining composed under pressure. "It's very much required, especially as a captain, to see boys stepping up and winning games. That's what we need going forward. We have created momentum, and it's important to be consistent," he said. He credited the team's focus on improvement rather than results. "The standard we set from match one—if we keep levelling up rather than worrying about results, all we need is to go a notch above every time we step on the field. That's the message: play to the best of your abilities and take the team through."
Iyer also addressed his role as a senior player. "I've played almost a similar number of matches to them—around 55 to 60. Many players have tremendous experience from the IPL. They are special talent, and getting the best out of them benefits the team. I focus on making them comfortable and relaxed because that's when you get the best performance," he explained.
A New Chapter for Indian T20I Cricket
The clean sweep is India's first T20I series win since their tour of New Zealand earlier this year. For Iyer, it marks a successful start to his tenure as full-time T20I captain. The team will look to build on this momentum in upcoming series, with the next assignment being a home series against Australia.
