Farmers staged a protest on Friday at the Uchana Kalan power corporation office, expressing their frustration over extended power outages caused by uprooted electricity poles during recent storms. The disruption has severely impacted paddy transplantation and irrigation activities in the region.
Power Infrastructure Damage
According to power department officials, the recent storms damaged nearly 2,000 electricity poles and a large number of transformers across Jind district, significantly affecting the power infrastructure. Efforts are underway, and the issue is expected to be resolved by the end of this month.
Protest Details
The farmers reportedly arrived at the office with the intention of locking it, but they were pacified after an assurance from the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) for an early resolution. The protesters claimed that despite repeated complaints, their grievances had not been addressed.
Farmers pointed out that the damaged electricity poles had not been replaced, causing paddy saplings to dry up due to lack of irrigation. Farmer Kapil stated that the electricity supply line to Alipura, Kharakbhura, and Karsindhu villages remained faulty for a considerable time. He alleged that the concerned lineman neither responds to phone calls nor visits the site. Despite submitting several complaints to the SDO and Executive Engineer (XEN), no action was taken, he claimed.
Kapil added that nearly 2,000 acres of agricultural land depend on the feeder for irrigation, and farmers are suffering significant losses due to the disruption in power supply. Another farmer, Bhupender, claimed that around 20 written complaints had been submitted against the lineman, but to no avail.
Officials' Response
Responding to the allegations, officials said contractors had been instructed to replace the damaged poles and efforts were underway to restore electricity at the earliest. Officials assured farmers that the issue would be resolved within the next two days.
