Joe Root tops ICC Test batting, Henry shares bowling lead with Bumrah

England's Joe Root has reclaimed the top position in the ICC Men's Test Batting Rankings, while New Zealand's Matt Henry has joined India's Jasprit Bumrah at the summit of the bowling rankings. The changes follow the second Test of the ICC World Test Championship series at The Oval, where New Zealand defeated England by 253 runs to level the series 1-1.

Root's Return to Number One

Root begins his 12th stint as the world's top Test batter after scoring 46 and 77 in the match. He overtook teammate Harry Brook and Australia's Travis Head in the latest update, according to an ICC media release. Root and Brook, both from Yorkshire, have exchanged the top position six times over the past 18 months since Root first surpassed New Zealand's Kane Williamson.

Other batters to gain include New Zealand's centurions Glenn Phillips, who advanced eight spots to 31st, Henry Nicholls, who climbed 13 places to 40th, and Rachin Ravindra, who moved back into the top 10.

Henry Shares Bowling Summit with Bumrah

In the bowling rankings, Henry's match haul of 11 for 109 lifted him to 870 rating points, tying with Bumrah. This is the second-highest rating ever achieved by a New Zealand bowler, behind Richard Hadlee's peak of 909 in 1985. Only one New Zealand batter has reached a higher rating – Kane Williamson with 919 in 2021 – making Henry's tally one of the best in Kiwi Test history, according to the ICC release.

Bumrah had held the top spot alone since overtaking South Africa's Kagiso Rabada in November 2024. Other movers include England's Jofra Archer (up six places to 50th) and Jacob Bethell (up 29 places to 85th).

ODI Rankings Updates

In the ICC Men's ODI Rankings, India captain Shubman Gill rose three spots to second among batters after being named Player of the Series in India's 3-0 home win against Afghanistan, amassing 238 runs. Left-handers Ishan Kishan (up 21 places to 43rd) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (up 84 places to 71st) also climbed, while Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi moved up four places to 52nd.

In the bowling rankings, India's Prasidh Krishna jumped from 92nd to joint-58th after a five-wicket haul in the final match, and Arshdeep Singh gained 16 slots to reach 22nd after taking five wickets in the series. Afghanistan off-spinner AM Ghazanfar advanced three places to 71st.
