Karnti Gaud Creates History with Five-Wicket Haul at Lord's
Karnti Gaud's Five-Wicket Haul at Lord's Makes History

Karnti Gaud created history on Tuesday by taking a five-wicket haul on her Test debut at Lord's, becoming the first Indian woman cricketer to achieve this milestone in England. The 22-year-old right-arm off-spinner finished with figures of 5 for 68 in England's first innings of the one-off Test.

Historic Feat at the Home of Cricket

Gaud's spell helped India bowl out England for 245 runs, giving the visitors a crucial lead. She dismissed England's top scorer Heather Knight (79) and opener Tammy Beaumont (32), among others. Her performance drew praise from former cricketers and fans alike.

"It's a dream come true to take a five-wicket haul at Lord's," Gaud said after the day's play. "I have always dreamed of playing here, and to contribute to the team's success is special."

India's Strong Response

In reply, India reached 112 for 2 at stumps on Day 2, with Smriti Mandhana (48*) and Jemimah Rodrigues (35*) at the crease. India now leads by 123 runs, putting them in a strong position to push for a win.

The Test match is part of a multi-format series between India and England, with points awarded for each match. India currently leads the series after winning the T20I leg 2-1.

Gaud's Journey to Lord's

Hailing from Haryana, Gaud made her domestic debut for Haryana in 2019 and quickly rose through the ranks. She was picked for the India A tour of Australia in 2023, where she impressed with her consistent performances. Her Test debut came after a stellar showing in the domestic season, where she took 28 wickets in the Senior Women's One-Day Trophy.

"I have worked hard on my bowling, especially on the off-spin variations," Gaud added. "The support from the team management and senior players has been immense."

England's Struggles

England's batting lineup faltered against India's disciplined bowling attack. After losing early wickets, Knight and Beaumont steadied the innings with a 87-run partnership. However, Gaud's introduction broke the stand, and England lost their last six wickets for 68 runs.

"We needed to build partnerships, but credit to India for bowling well," England captain Heather Knight said. "Karnti bowled really well, and we couldn't counter her."

The match continues on Day 3, with India looking to set a challenging target for England.
