Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has weighed in on Shreyas Iyer's underwhelming start as India's T20I captain, following the team's defeat to England in the second T20I on July 5, 2026. Karthik emphasized that Iyer needs to show more consistency in his decision-making and leadership to establish himself in the role.
Karthik's Assessment of Iyer's Captaincy
Speaking on a cricket discussion show, Karthik noted that Iyer's captaincy has been a mixed bag so far. "Shreyas has the potential to be a good leader, but his start has been subpar. The loss against England exposed some tactical gaps," Karthik said. He pointed out that Iyer's field placements and bowling changes during the match were questionable, particularly in the death overs where England scored 68 runs in the last five overs.
India posted 165/6 batting first, but England chased down the target with four wickets in hand, thanks to a 78-run partnership between Jos Buttler and Liam Livingstone. Karthik highlighted that Iyer's over-reliance on his spinners backfired on a pitch that offered little turn.
Comparison with Previous Captains
Karthik drew comparisons with former India T20I captains like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who brought a more aggressive approach. "Shreyas needs to be proactive, not reactive. He should learn from Rohit's ability to set attacking fields and from Kohli's intensity," Karthik added. He also stressed the importance of clear communication with bowlers and players on the field.
Statistically, Iyer has captained India in five T20Is, winning three and losing two. His win percentage of 60% is respectable, but Karthik believes the team needs a leader who can inspire confidence in crunch situations.
Impact on India's T20I Future
The loss to England has put pressure on Iyer ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2027. Karthik warned that inconsistent captaincy could derail India's preparations. "The selectors and management need to back him, but he must show improvement quickly. Every match counts as we build towards the World Cup," he said.
Karthik also suggested that Iyer could benefit from mentoring under more experienced leaders in the squad, such as Hardik Pandya or Rishabh Pant. "Captaincy is a learning curve, but the team cannot afford too many mistakes at this level," he concluded.
