Initially, cricket fans in the city were disheartened by Pakistan's refusal to play India in Colombo on February 15. However, the explosive performances by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi against England and Team India's winning streak in recent T20 Internationals have revitalized local interest. Fans and travel agents alike believe this momentum will only intensify as Suryakumar Yadav and his team continue their dominant run. Travel agencies have reported a flood of inquiries for match tickets and flight bookings, indicating a growing trend.
Local Action and International Appeal
The cricket action hit home turf on Saturday afternoon when Eden Gardens hosted the West Indies versus Scotland match. Anil Punjabi of AR-ES Travels, who also serves as a committee member of the Travel Agents' Federation of India, noted, "There was a decent crowd at the ground, which is impressive considering this was just the first match and India was not involved. Interestingly, we're seeing a rising demand for the Italy-Scotland match at Eden on Monday, likely driven by football fans who support Italy. With India in red-hot form, interest will skyrocket. We've already booked groups to Delhi and Ahmedabad for India's subsequent group matches against non-Test-playing countries, and demand is expected to surge further."
Punjabi added that a "good number" of Kolkata residents traveled to Mumbai for India's opening match, highlighting the city's dedication to supporting the national team.
Fan Excitement and Future Prospects
Techie Souvik Basu, who watched the India-USA match at home with friends, commented that the controversies surrounding Pakistan have only heightened interest among cricket enthusiasts. "If India maintains this level of play, there will be a mad scramble for knockout stage tickets. Imagine India playing a Super Eight match at Eden Gardens in three weeks—I can't wait to be there," said Basu. Some of his friends are even planning to attend the Italy-Scotland game, drawn by the allure of seeing the "Blues" in action. Cricket fan Shamik De explained, "It's rare to catch Italy playing football, so cricket it is."
Kolkata entrepreneur Mahesh Punjabi, part of a group called "The Twelfth Man" that travels globally to watch India-Pakistan matches, expressed hope for a last-minute reconciliation. "It might be too late for us to travel if that happens, but we could head to an Indian venue like Eden Gardens, where India plays their last Super Eight match," he shared.
Ticket Demand and Market Trends
Manav Soni of the Travel Agents' Association of India observed that many in Kolkata are holding onto hopes for an India-Pakistan match. "There's significant pressure on Pakistan to agree to play, given the high stakes. Even without it, ticket demand has been slowly increasing, and as India dominates, this will soar. We anticipate a full house for India's second-round match at Eden," Soni stated.
On the ticket resale website viagogo, only 1% of tickets for the India-USA match remained unsold by Saturday afternoon, with the most expensive priced at Rs 67,339. For India's match against Namibia on February 12, the highest price jumped to Rs 73,514. Notably, the site offered no tickets for the India-Pakistan game on February 15, reflecting the uncertainty and high demand surrounding that potential clash.
