India's stand-in head coach VVS Laxman has identified overall fitness as the primary area for teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to focus on as he continues his rapid rise in international cricket. Laxman's comments come after Sooryavanshi played a match-winning knock of 81 off 49 balls in India's 35-run victory over Zimbabwe in Harare, which earned him the Player of the Series award for accumulating 151 runs in three matches.
Laxman's Fitness Advice
“The one area we want him to improve is his overall fitness,” Laxman said, as quoted on the ICC website. He noted that the 15-year-old is eager to improve in all aspects of the game. “He himself wants to get better in every aspect of the game. Even today, when he got injured (while attempting a diving catch running in from deep square leg), he still wanted to stay on the field. It was our physio who asked him to come off. That's the eagerness and earnestness he has to contribute in every possible way to the team,” Laxman added.
Sooryavanshi's commitment was evident during the match, but Laxman stressed that building physical resilience is crucial for sustaining peak performance over a long career. The coach's guidance comes from his role as BCCI's Head of Cricket, having overseen India's victorious Under-19 World Cup campaign earlier this year.
Sooryavanshi's International Breakthrough
The left-handed opener was the leading run-scorer in the Under-19 World Cup, amassing 439 runs and winning the Player of the Tournament award. His performances in Zimbabwe further underlined his talent, as he consistently took on the Zimbabwean bowlers with aggressive strokeplay. His 81-run innings included several boundaries and showcased his ability to accelerate under pressure.
Sooryavanshi's series tally of 151 runs was the highest by any batter, and he became the youngest Indian to win a Player of the Series award in T20Is. His quickfire half-century in the final match helped India post a competitive total before their bowlers defended it effectively.
Rising Star's Future
Beyond international cricket, Sooryavanshi has also impressed in the Indian Premier League, playing for Rajasthan Royals over the past two seasons. His ability to adapt to different formats and conditions has drawn comparisons with some of India's greats. Laxman's focus on fitness aims to ensure the teenager can handle the rigors of professional cricket without breaking down.
India's series win against Zimbabwe, their third consecutive T20I series victory, was built on contributions from both experienced players and youngsters like Sooryavanshi. The team management is keen to nurture such talent, and Laxman's mentorship will be key in shaping Sooryavanshi's growth. As the young batter continues to evolve, fitness will be the cornerstone of his development, enabling him to deliver consistent performances for India.
