France Edges Paraguay in Heated Round of 16 Clash
Kylian Mbappe converted a second-half penalty to give France a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the FIFA World Cup 2026 round of 16 at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday. The win sends the defending champions into the quarterfinals, where they will face Morocco.
The match was marked by intense physicality and controversy, with Paraguay employing aggressive tactics that frustrated the French side. France dominated possession with over 80% of the ball in the early stages but struggled to create clear chances against a disciplined Paraguayan defense.
The first half ended without a single shot on target, making it only the third World Cup knockout match since 1966 to achieve that distinction. Tempers flared when Mbappe reacted to a challenge from Andres Cubas, sparking a mass confrontation between both teams.
Mbappe Penalty Decides Tense Contest
France increased the pressure after the break, with Manu Kone forcing a save from Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill with a powerful long-range strike. The breakthrough came in the 66th minute when substitute Desire Doue was brought down in the penalty area by Diego Gomez after weaving past three defenders.
Mbappe calmly slotted the resulting spot-kick into the bottom corner despite Paraguay's attempts to delay the restart. Paraguay pushed for an equalizer in the closing stages, but France managed the game expertly to protect their lead. Mbappe nearly added a second in stoppage time, but Gill made an excellent double save.
Mbappe and Deschamps Criticize Paraguay's Tactics
After the match, Mbappe expressed frustration with what he called Paraguay's "dirty" football. "I think we knew what kind of match we were going to have, but today it's very good. We showed that we weren't just a team that knew how to play offensive football," Mbappe told host broadcasters. "They thought we were going to come playing in tuxedos... We know how to play dirty football, too. And we did it today, we won, and even in that, we were better than them."
France coach Didier Deschamps accused Paraguay of using "every trick in the book" and said he instructed his players to protect Mbappe from physical challenges. "It was not easy. They use every trick in the book. It's not the kind of football that will bring people to the stadium, but they defended well," Deschamps said, as quoted by Reuters.
Morocco Makes History with Dominant Win Over Canada
Earlier on Saturday, Morocco became the first team to reach the quarterfinals with a commanding 3-0 victory over co-hosts Canada. The match was the most ill-disciplined of the tournament, with the referee showing eight yellow cards and awarding 38 fouls.
Morocco made history by becoming the first African nation to reach the quarterfinals of two FIFA World Cup editions, having also achieved the feat in Qatar 2022. They have now progressed from four World Cup knockout matches overall, equaling the combined total of all other African nations.
Ounahi and Hakimi Shine for Morocco
Azzedine Ounahi scored a second-half brace, becoming the first Moroccan player to score twice in a World Cup match since Salaheddine Bassir in 1998. Achraf Hakimi provided an assist from a cleverly worked free-kick, his third World Cup assist, putting him among the top defenders in that category since 1966.
Brahim Diaz also recorded two assists, taking his World Cup tally to four, the most by any African player in tournament history. Soufiane Rahimi added a third goal with virtually the last kick of the match.
Morocco's victory extended their unbeaten run to 10 matches and improved their record to seven wins from their last nine knockout fixtures in major tournaments. For Canada, the defeat ended a memorable campaign despite reaching the knockout stage for the first time.
