Ministry Releases Official Selection Framework for Asian Games
The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS) has unveiled the official framework for selecting the Indian contingent for the 2026 Asian Games, scheduled to take place in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4. The framework details the step-by-step process for the selection and approval of athletes, coaches, and support staff, emphasizing that only those included in the sanction order issued by MYAS are considered part of the official Indian contingent.
Five-Step Selection Process
The selection process follows a structured five-step procedure. First, each recognized National Sports Federation (NSF) conducts selection trials or adopts its approved selection methodology, adhering to the technical regulations of the respective International Federation or Asian Federation. These trials are conducted in the presence of observers and are recorded on camera to ensure fairness and transparency.
Second, based on the trial outcomes and the NSF's eligibility criteria, the NSF prepares a recommended list of athletes, coaches, and support staff for the Asian Games and forwards it to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). Third, the IOA, as the National Olympic Committee responsible for entry of the Indian contingent in multi-sport events, forwards the discipline-wise recommendations to MYAS for examination and sanction.
Scrutiny and Final Approval
Fourth, MYAS forwards the recommended list to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) for scrutiny against applicable MYAS guidelines, Asian Games selection criteria, performance standards, and eligibility conditions. SAI then submits its recommendations to MYAS. Fifth, MYAS conducts final scrutiny of the list received from SAI and submits it for approval by the Competent Authority. Upon approval, MYAS issues the official Sanction Order, which alone constitutes the official Indian contingent for the Games.
Clarification on Published Lists
The Ministry clarified that any list published by an NSF after its selection trials represents only the federation's recommended or selected list from its internal process and does not constitute the final government-approved Indian contingent. Names recommended by NSFs remain subject to scrutiny by IOA, examination by SAI, and final approval by MYAS. Therefore, only those athletes, coaches, and support staff whose names appear in the Sanction Order issued by MYAS are treated as members of the official Indian contingent for the Asian Games.
