Nagpur Police Crack Down on Illegal Cricket Betting Operation
The Local Crime Branch (LCB) of Nagpur rural police successfully dismantled a cricket betting racket that was actively operating in the Saoner area. This enforcement action resulted in the arrest of two individuals who were engaged in gambling activities specifically centered around an ICC Men's T20 World Cup match.
Tip-Off Leads to Raid and Arrests
Acting on credible intelligence received through a tip-off, the dedicated LCB team conducted a targeted raid on February 18. The operation focused on a location situated near the first bus stop along the Saoner to Telgaon Road. During this raid, police officers apprehended Pratik Banait, a 27-year-old resident of Bazar Chowk in Saoner, who was actively accepting bets via mobile phones.
The illegal betting was specifically linked to the high-profile cricket match between India and Netherlands during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup tournament. Upon immediate questioning by authorities, Pratik Banait disclosed that he was assisting another co-accused individual in facilitating the gambling operation.
Details of the Illegal Operation and Seizures
Pratik Banait informed investigators that he was working under the direction of Sandeep Sawal, also from Saoner, who was identified as the primary operator running the illicit betting racket. The police investigation revealed an organized setup designed to capitalize on the cricket match's popularity for gambling purposes.
Following the raid and arrests, law enforcement officials confiscated significant evidence from the scene. The seized items included multiple smartphones with an estimated total value of 55,000 rupees, along with 1,000 rupees in cash. Additional materials related to the betting operation were also recovered, bringing the total value of confiscated items to 56,005 rupees.
Legal Action and Charges Filed
Saoner police have formally registered a case against the arrested individuals under Section 12(A) of the Maharashtra Prevention of Gambling Act. This legal provision specifically addresses gambling activities and provides the framework for prosecution in such cases.
The police operation demonstrates continued vigilance against illegal gambling networks, particularly those attempting to exploit major sporting events like international cricket tournaments. Authorities have emphasized their commitment to identifying and dismantling such operations that violate gambling laws in the region.
