In the wake of the devastating Delhi blast that claimed 13 lives and left dozens injured, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has issued a directive for implementing rigorous security protocols for the upcoming India-South Africa T-20 International match. The high-profile cricket encounter is scheduled to be held at Cuttack's Barabati Stadium on December 9.
High-Level Meeting Reviews Security Protocols
The Chief Minister chaired a high-level preparatory meeting at the Lok Seva Bhawan on Wednesday to review all arrangements for the sporting event. Emphasizing the national and global attention the match would attract, CM Majhi stated that the event must be conducted seamlessly to reflect Odisha's efficiency and honour. He specifically instructed the police administration to maintain a high alert for public safety, directly citing the recent Delhi incident as a reason for heightened vigilance.
Comprehensive Plan for a Smooth Event
During the meeting, a multi-faceted plan was laid out to ensure the event's success and safety. Majhi directed officials to create a coordinated green corridor to handle any medical emergencies swiftly. Furthermore, he stressed the need for proper crowd management, efficient ticket sales, and robust health services at the venue.
Sanjay Behera, the secretary, provided a detailed overview of the preparations. The plans encompass critical aspects such as stadium infrastructure, fire safety measures, parking facilities, traffic control, and lighting arrangements. Both the state administration and the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) have been instructed to work in tandem for the flawless and dignified execution of the event.
Learning from Past Incidents
The push for impeccable arrangements also stems from an embarrassing floodlight failure earlier this year. During the second ODI between India and England in February, a power outage at the Barabati Stadium caused a 35-minute delay in the game. This incident had prompted the state government to seek an explanation from the OCA, making the current administration particularly vigilant to avoid any such recurrences.
