Priyank Panchal Slams Ten Doeschate's 'Terrible' Comments on Rohit Sharma and Nitish Reddy
Former Gujarat batter Priyank Panchal has strongly criticized India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate. Panchal targeted ten Doeschate for his recent remarks about Rohit Sharma and Nitish Reddy. These comments followed India's second ODI against New Zealand in Rajkot.
Panchal Questions Foreign Coaches' Success in India
The 35-year-old Panchal called ten Doeschate's statements "terrible." He insisted that foreign coaches often struggle in India. Panchal pointed out their lack of flexibility in handling player relationships. He emphasized the need for dexterity to navigate these dynamics.
Panchal specifically mentioned that foreign coaches might lack notable achievements in their CVs. This factor could affect their credibility and effectiveness in the Indian cricket environment.
Ten Doeschate's Controversial Remarks
Ryan ten Doeschate made his comments after India's defeat. He noted that Rohit Sharma seemed short on game time. Regarding Nitish Reddy, ten Doeschate said the all-rounder did not capitalize on his opportunities.
"With Nitish, we keep talking about developing him and getting him game time," ten Doeschate told reporters. "Then when you do get him game time, he often ends up not doing a heck of a lot in the games. For someone who's making their way, particularly with the bat tonight, it was that perfect chance where you're walking in that situation, and you've got a chance to spend 15 overs at the wicket. You really have to take those chances to push your case to be selected."
On Rohit Sharma, ten Doeschate remarked, "He's definitely not the sort of guy to play for himself. It's just a combination of the wickets being slightly difficult and maybe just being a little bit short on cricket leading into the series."
Background on the Players
Rohit Sharma entered the New Zealand series with four consecutive fifty-plus scores for India. Nitish Reddy was playing only his third ODI. Their performances have been under scrutiny amid team discussions.
Manoj Tiwary Also Criticizes Ten Doeschate
Former India batter Manoj Tiwary joined the criticism. He lambasted ten Doeschate for his negative comments. Tiwary highlighted that ten Doeschate's international achievements pale in comparison to Rohit Sharma's.
"With a lot of respect, I would like to tell Ryan Ten Doeschate that he was with me for four years at KKR," Tiwary told PTI. "No doubt he is a very good person, but the kind of comment he has made, I think, he should have thought about it. He has also played international cricket for the Netherlands. If you look at his performance in international cricket, I am saying this with all due respect, it is not even 5% of what Rohit has achieved in his career, not just as a batter but also as a captain."
Implications for Coaching in Indian Cricket
This incident raises broader questions about foreign coaches in India. Panchal's comments suggest a cultural mismatch. He implies that success in Indian cricket requires more than technical expertise. It demands strong interpersonal skills and adaptability.
The debate touches on how coaches communicate with players publicly. Critics argue that ten Doeschate's remarks could demoralize the team. Supporters might see them as honest assessments for improvement.
As India continues to engage with international coaching staff, such discussions will likely persist. The focus remains on balancing critique with support to foster player development and team cohesion.
