Rishabh Pant, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shardul Thakur to Miss Mumbai vs Delhi Ranji Trophy Clash
Pant, Jaiswal, Thakur Out of Mumbai-Delhi Ranji Match

Key Players Ruled Out of Crucial Ranji Trophy League Match

In a significant development for domestic cricket, three prominent Indian cricketers will be absent from the upcoming Mumbai versus Delhi Ranji Trophy encounter. India's Test vice-captain Rishabh Pant, explosive opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, and versatile allrounder Shardul Thakur have all been ruled out of the final league match scheduled from January 29 to February 1 at the Mumbai Cricket Association's BKC facility.

Injury and Illness Concerns Sideline Star Players

The absence of these key players stems from various health issues that have plagued them in recent weeks. Rishabh Pant continues to recover from a side strain sustained before the first ODI against New Zealand in Baroda on January 11. According to sources, the wicketkeeper-batter has been undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence for approximately the last week to ten days.

In Pant's continued absence, Ayush Badoni has taken over the captaincy responsibilities for the Delhi team, demonstrating the depth of leadership within the squad.

Meanwhile, Yashasvi Jaiswal recently underwent an endoscopic procedure to address persistent stomach pain. This health concern has troubled the young opener since his hospitalization following Mumbai's last game in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy in Pune, where he suffered from a severe bout of food poisoning.

Shardul Thakur joins the list of unavailable players due to a calf injury sustained during the league stage of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The pace-bowling allrounder has been in recovery mode since that incident, missing crucial matches for his domestic side.

Mumbai's Selection Strategy and Quarterfinal Preparation

Mumbai chief selector Sanjay Patil addressed the selection challenges, stating that Jaiswal, Thakur, and off-spinning allrounder Tanush Kotian will only be reconsidered for selection after they submit their fitness reports to the Mumbai Cricket Association. Kotian continues to recover from a hand injury that has kept him sidelined.

Despite these significant absences, Mumbai has demonstrated remarkable resilience in the tournament. The team secured their place in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinals in impressive fashion on Sunday, defeating Hyderabad by nine wickets while fielding a depleted squad. With 30 points from six matches, including four outright victories, Mumbai enters the final league match with considerable momentum.

Patil praised the team's younger players for their outstanding performances, emphasizing the balanced combination of youth and experience in the squad. "We've chosen the best team, with a good combination of youngsters and senior players. Without the big names, our team has been performing brilliantly. I'm really happy with the performance of our youngsters," the chief selector remarked.

Squad Changes and Future Prospects

The Mumbai squad for the Delhi encounter features two notable changes:

  • Shams Mulani returns to the side after recovering from urine-related issues that kept him out of the Hyderabad match, replacing the injured Atharva Ankolekar.
  • DSuryansh Shedge earns a recall to the squad in place of Aakash Parkar, based on his consistent performances for the Mumbai Under-23 team, including a century against Bengal in the Col CK Nayudu Trophy.

Looking ahead, there is optimism that Jaiswal and Thakur could return to action when Mumbai competes in the Ranji Trophy quarter-finals scheduled from February 6-10. Their recovery progress will be closely monitored by the team management and selectors.

The Mumbai squad for the crucial encounter against Delhi includes:

  1. Siddhesh Lad (captain)
  2. Musheer Khan
  3. Sairaj Patil
  4. Akhil Herwadkar
  5. Hardik Tampore (WK)
  6. Suved Parkar
  7. Sarfaraz Khan
  8. Aakash Anand (WK)

  11. Tushar Deshpande
  12. Himanshu Singh
