The Portugal national team has chosen to ignore external criticism as they prepare for their second FIFA World Cup match against Uzbekistan. Following a disappointing 1-1 draw with DR Congo in their opener, the team remains focused on their objectives.
Portugal's Stance on Criticism
Speaking ahead of the game, Portugal defender Ruben Dias stated, as quoted by Reuters, "The criticism is not significant for us, it's noise and part of the competition ... It is all noise." He emphasized that the team is closing itself off from unnecessary criticism.
Dias added, "It always happens if you have a match that does not go well. We are closing ourselves off from unnecessary criticism."
Cristiano Ronaldo Under Scrutiny
Cristiano Ronaldo, making his record sixth World Cup appearance, faced criticism after the draw. His goal drought at major tournaments extended to 10 matches, dating back to the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Former Arsenal and France legend Thierry Henry suggested that Ronaldo was chasing personal glory rather than team success.
However, Dias defended his teammate, stating, "Cristiano, of course, is used to dealing with the media pressure we usually face in the club, the national team, world tournaments, European competitions."
Team Focus and Preparation
Dias, who missed the opener due to injury, declared himself ready for the Uzbekistan clash. He noted that Uzbekistan might employ similar defensive tactics as DR Congo, which he is familiar with from his time at Manchester City.
"I come from playing most of my club matches against teams that use a back five, so I have a very clear idea about it," Dias said. "Respecting positional discipline becomes decisive in matches like these."
He concluded, "I believe we have players with enough quality that, by respecting our positions and making the right decisions, we can make the difference."
