Prasidh Krishna Becomes First Indian to Take Five-Wicket Haul at Chepauk
Prasidh Krishna Makes History with Five-Wicket Haul at Chepauk

Pacer Prasidh Krishna etched his name in the history books on Saturday by registering the best figures by an Indian bowler at Chennai's iconic Chepauk Stadium. He also became the first Indian to take a five-wicket haul at the venue.

Match Performance

During the third and final ODI against Afghanistan, Krishna was on fire in the powerplay, taking four wickets. He capped off his spell by dismissing centurion Hashmatullah Shahidi to bundle out Afghanistan for 218 runs. The wicket of the Afghanistan skipper earned Krishna his first-ever five-wicket haul in ODIs, with figures of 5/23.

Record-Breaking Figures

Krishna's 5/23 are the best figures by an Indian bowler at Chepauk Stadium. The previous best was 5/51 by West Indies' Ravi Rampaul against India in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, and 5/61 by Pakistan's Aquib Javed against India in 1997. The only other instance of an Indian bowler taking a four-wicket haul in Chennai ODIs was Ajit Agarkar's 4/34 against England in 2002.

Krishna also joined an elite group of Indian bowlers who have dismissed each of the top five opposition batters in an ODI. He is the third Indian to achieve this feat, after Mohammed Shami (against New Zealand in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup) and Manoj Prabhakar (against Sri Lanka in Hyderabad in 1994).

Career Statistics

In 25 ODIs, Krishna has taken 45 wickets at an average of 25.77 and an economy rate of 5.91, with three four-wicket hauls and one five-wicket haul. His best figures are 5/23.

Match Summary

Afghanistan won the toss and opted to bat first, but Krishna reduced them to 36/4 in the powerplay. A 105-run stand between Azmatullah Omarzai (50 off 56 balls, with five fours and two sixes) and skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi (102 off 131 balls, with 13 fours and a six) brought Afghanistan back into the game. However, after Omarzai's dismissal, Indian bowlers struck regularly. Shahidi managed to bring up his maiden ODI century before being dismissed. Prince Yadav, Gurnoor Brar, and Harsh Dubey also took a wicket each.
